Shane loved a roast, a pastie made by his mother-in-law Dottie, he loved bacon and eggs for Brekky and he cooked a mean silverside. And thick soups in winter. Yum!

Play something country! Or Doctor Hook. Or that awful song about the sunken boat by Gordon Lightfoot.

Interesting facts about Shane

Shane trained with Carlton when he was 15, but returned to Bendigo because he got homesick - as you would as a teenager. Shane made his senior cricket debut at the age of 14 and faced his first ball left-handed, switching sides as the bowler ran in. Shane worked with Aussie Rules legend, Ron Barassi for about 18 months. Shane played representative cricket for Singapore. Shane was humbled and honored to be the first Maristians cricket player inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2018.

Being surrounded by people he loved, sharing great food, a drink or two and lots and lots of talk and laughter. Dad just loved being with people.

Shane loved any sport, anywhere in the world, at any time of the day or night. He loved quiz shows and had a great mind for trivia. He was however, prone to making you think he really did know the answer to a question when he was actually bluffing. That made him a pain in the arse on trivia nights.

AFL & cricket. However, he loved watching all sports and appreciated excellence in anyone who excelled.

Favorite movies

Shane loved movies about people overcoming great obstacles such as the Rocky movies, but he also loved science fiction (Lord of the Rings trilogy), and movies about wartime stories. He found military history fascinating.

Shane was a painter and decorator by trade. He joined the army in his early 20s and served in Townsville, Singapore, Adelaide and Melbourne. After being discharged, he was a very successful salesman for many years. Later, he was a co-founder of a family online jobs site.

Shane Anthony Higgins, lovingly known as Shaney or Shamus, passed away on April 28, 2024, at the age of 76. He was born on September 17, 1947, in Deniliquin, New South Wales, Australia. Shane spent his final years in Brisbane, Queensland.

Shane had a zest for life and pursued his favorite hobbies with enthusiasm. He enjoyed playing sports, reading Clive Cussler novels and sport biographies, and watching the Lions play. Gardening and watching his beloved grandchildren brought him immense joy. His taste in music ranged from country tunes to Doctor Hook, and he had a fondness for Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

Shane had a deep appreciation for good company and cherished moments spent with loved ones. He loved sharing great food, drinks, and engaging in lively conversations filled with laughter. His warm and welcoming nature endeared him to everyone he met.

Sports played a significant role in Shane's life, with Australian Football League (AFL) and cricket being his favorites. He admired excellence in any sport and appreciated the dedication and skill of athletes. Shane is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Judy, whom he met as a teenager. He fondly remembered the day they met and cherished their bond throughout their lives. Shane even named a rose after her, the Judicus Beautificonicus. He is also survived by his sisters Mary and Helen, and his brothers Denis and Len.

Shane Anthony Higgins impacted the lives of countless individuals through his genuine interest in people and his boundless generosity. His coaching endeavors and his ability to make friends in an instant made him an admired leader within the community. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of life. Shane will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A beautiful celebration of Shane’s 76 magnificent years will be held in Brisbane. Shane always wanted a “party” after he died rather than a funeral, and we his family are honouring that request.
