An artist by nature, he was very talented and enjoyed drawing on any and everything he could find.
He was a man of diverse talents and experiences. A master craftsman, he built three custom Harley-Davidsons and cherished his collection of Volkswagen vans over the years. He possessed an uncanny ability to fix anything he set his hands to, and his skills extended to the pool table, where he was a phenomenal player. His late “best friend" was his beloved German Shepherd, Keiko. His 25-year career with the United States Coast Guard, specializing in Aviation and Search and Rescue, took him around the globe, from the North and South Poles to the Berlin Wall and the Scottish Highlands. He saw the breadth of his country, too, from Sitka, Alaska, to Puerto Rico, with stops in Traverse City, Michigan, Savannah, Georgia, and Astoria, Oregon, among many others. He eventually settled on the beautiful Gulf Coast in Mobile, Alabama. While stationed in Puerto Rico, he shared a memorable evening with Jimmy Buffett, playing pool and, no doubt, enjoying a "Cheeseburger in Paradise" after servicing Buffett's personal aircraft. Through it all, his faith deepened, and he found solace and purpose in his relationship with Jesus Christ. His heart was truly in God's hands.
Joe loved music and would often be found rocking out to Alice in Chains, Lynard Skynard, Eurythmics, Journey, Led Zeppelin or the Doors.
You could find him watching sci-fi movies and browsing for RVs and classic cars. He enjoyed working on his home, building custom motorcycles and sending hilarious memes non stop when he figured out how to work his phone. He loved to have family over at his pool, he took great pride in having a beautiful spot for everyone to gather.
He always knew his own mind, and where he stood in any situation. He was tough as nails with a big heart.
He is preceded in death by Owen Noble Lackey (Father), Jennie Penrose (Life companion), Edna Geraldine Lackey (Mother), MariAnne Lee (Sister) He is survived by Patty Lackey (Wife), Owen and Tracy Lackey (Brother), SaraJane and John Francis (Sister), Mary Lisa (Step sister), Molly Ann Nelko (Daughter), Bonnie Jo Troxel (Daughter), Joseph Cody Lackey (Son).
