Willie Alger Owens, born on December 18, 1948, in Iaeger, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024, at McCalls hospice house after a short battle with Cancer. A dedicated coal miner for 35 years, Willie formed lasting friendships with many of his coworkers, often considering them family.
A simple country man at heart, Willie enjoyed traditional meals such as pinto beans, cornbread, and greens, and he cherished trips to Long John Silver whenever his health permitted. He had a great appreciation for classic country music, often finding joy in the songs of legends like George Jones, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash.
As one of eleven brothers and five sisters, Willie was known for his strong family ties. He loved to spend time on his yard bench, watching the mountains that surrounded him in Otterbranch Holler, a place he proudly called home his entire life. His evenings were often spent watching his favorite TV shows, including "Mountain Men" and "Wrestling," and he was a devoted fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Willie's greatest joy was being a father to his two sons, a role he embraced with immense pride. He is preceded in death by his parents, Matthew Homer Owens and Stella Mae Kennedy Owens, as well as several siblings.Sisters Lula Owens Rambo,Phyllis Owens and Frances Shelton Owens. Brothers Matthew H. Owens,Columbus H. Owens,George”Sonny Boy”Owens,Franklin D.Owens,Donald “Lawrence”Owens,Charles Owens and Sylvester Owens.He is survived by brothers Vincil “Kyle” Owens and Douglas M. Owens, and sisters Brenda Owens Steele and Cleo Owens Long, along with many nieces and nephews who were raised with the close bonds of siblings.
Willie Alger Owens will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His spirit and love for family will remain in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
