William Humphrey Barrett Obituary

William Humphrey Barrett of Stuart,Florida passed away on June 24, 2024, at the age of 77. He was born on August 28, 1946, in Boston, MA and grew up in Hanover, New Hampshire. Bill attended the Kent School and after graduation, joined the Air Force where he became a decorated pilot in the Vietnam war. after four years of military service Bill went to University of New Hampshire where he received a graduate and a Masters degree in Economics. He moved to Washington, DC to work on the ATT breakup, first at the FCC and then the US department of Justice. He received his Law degree from George Washington University while working full time at DOJ.

Throughout his career, Bill achieved great success as an economist and attorney, particularly during his time with the Antitrust division of the US Department of Justice. His notable contributions included participating in the investigation of ATT, which ultimately led to the DOJ's Antitrust suit resulting in the breakup of the Bell System. After leaving the government, Bill ventured into private practice and became a Partner at the prestigious law firm McDermott Will & Emery, based in their DC office. His expertise primarily focused on domestic and international antitrust and litigation matters.

One of Bill's favorite mottos in life was "Plan the flight, fly the plan," highlighting his meticulous and strategic approach to both his professional and personal endeavors. When he wasn't immersed in his career, Bill found joy in his passions for flying and boating. He was an avid pilot and loved nothing more than flying with his family to the Bahamas, where they enjoyed cruising on their Trawler. Additionally, he cherished cruising along the picturesque coast of Maine.

Bill was married to Patricia J Barrett for 39 years residing in McLean, Virginia and Charleston, SC. Together, they created a beautiful family, raising two children, William H Barrett Jr (Nicole) and Eliza J Barrett. Bill was immensely proud of his family, and his love extended to his two cherished grandchildren, William H Barrett III and Sutton Hadley Barrett.

In addition to his immediate family, Bill is survived by his brothers, George Barrett and Jay Barrett. He is predeceased by his parents Frank J Barrett and Dorothy Hill Barrett and his five beloved Labrador Retrievers. His kind and compassionate nature, combined with his diverse range of interests, made him a true Renaissance man.

Bill's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. As we bid farewell to this remarkable individual, let us remember him for his remarkable achievements, unwavering love for his family, and his zest for life. A graveside service will be held in Framingham, Mass in the Fall.
