Vurnest McFarland Jr. was born on April 4, 1941, in Memphis, TN, and passed away on January 1, 2025, in St. Louis, Mo. A dedicated family man and a kind-hearted individual, Vurnest was well-known for his passion for life and unwavering service to others.
He proudly served as a Marine in the Vietnam War, a testament to his courage and commitment to his country. After his military service, he became a skilled railroad engineer and later worked as a bus driver for Fort Zumwalt School District, where he was known for his kindness and reliability.
Throughout his life, he was known for his strong work ethic and his unwavering commitment to his family. Vurnest found joy in simple pleasures, such as watching sports, cooking, and gardening. He had a special love for traveling back to his roots in Memphis, TN, where he cherished the rich culture and soul food that defined his upbringing. Those who knew him will fondly remember his favorite meals, especially his beloved sweet rice for breakfast and an array of delectable sweets.
Musically inclined, Vurnest had a deep appreciation for Old School RnB, Jazz, Classic Rock, and Soul music, often filling his home with the sounds of his favorite artists. He was the father of Vurnest III, Verna Renee, Kendra Swanson, Janel Swanson ,Jameca Crawford, Ramon, Gary, Jerrod, Zyren, Quince, De’Lesia McFarland all of whom will carry on his legacy with love and remembrance. Vurnest was also a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to many, who will cherish his memory and the lessons he imparted throughout his life.
He leaves behind two sisters, Thelma Bowen and Louis Jean McFarland, along with a host of family and friends who will miss his warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit. Vurnest McFarland Jr. will be remembered as a devoted family man, a veteran, and a friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
