Courier. Brotherhood of Steel Paladin. Mercenary. Ambassador. Political Assassin. Debt Collector. Pimp. Professional Gambler.
The Courier was hired to carry a Platinum Poker Chip from Primm to The Las Vegas Strip by a mysterious client, who used a robot to place the order. On his way to make the delivery, he was ambushed by a man in a checkered suit and a group of Great Khans. They knocked him out to steal the chip, and the man in the suit shot him in the head twice in an attempt to kill The Courier. After the attack, the same robot who placed the order dug The Courier out of a shallow grave they left him in and took him to the local doctor, who took care of him for two days while he recovered. Back on his feet, the Courier returned to The Mojave Express courier company in Primm to learn more details about the delivery he was to make as to find more details about why he was attacked and where his attackers were headed. Through some sources. he learned that his attackers were headed to a place called Novac after passing through the town of Nipton. When the Courier arrived in Nipton, he learned that the town had been razed by members of Caesar's Legion. He later continued to the town of Novac, where he questioned one of the local snipers for more information on his attackers, who sent him to Boulder City. In Boulder City, he met up with the Great Khans who attacked him, currently pinned down by NCR Soldiers. After negotiating a peaceful resolution, the Great Khans informed The Courier that the man in the checkered suit, named Benny, has betrayed them and returned to his casino in Vegas with the platinum chip. The Courier finally made his way to Freeside, the slum outside of the New Vegas Strip, and later into the Strip itself. There, his story truly took off. Upon arriving on the Strip, he was formally invited by Mr. House, the mysterious enigmatic de facto dictator of the Las Vegas Strip into his Lucky 38 Casino, where no other living person has set foot for over 200 years. Mr. House informs The Courier that he was the one who requested the Platinum Chip, and he knew that Benny had stolen it. House sent him to deal with Benny however he saw fit and recover the chip. Upon leaving the Lucky 38 to deal with Benny, he learns that he got attention from entering, specifically the attention of the NCR, who invited him to a meeting with their Ambassador on the Strip. The Courier enters the Tops Casino where Benny is, and kills Benny to recover the Chip. Upon leaving, he is approached by a man in a suit, who bestows upon him the Mark of Caesar, an invitation to meet Caesar himself, and a message stating that any crimes against the Legion committed previously are forgiven. After returning the Platinum Chip to Mr. House, House informs The Courier about the plans for the NCR-Legion war over the Hoover Dam, and how the Courier is directly involved. House now sends the Courier to Caesar's Fort on Fortification Hill to upgrade his robot army. The Courier, formally invited to meet with Caesar, learns that Caesar in currently planning to assault Hoover Da, but needs to correct the power balance. His first step is to be rid of House. He sends the Courier into a bunker (which turned out to house the bulk of House's robot army) to destroy whatever he finds. The Courier enters the bunker and does as House instructed him to do, upgrade the robots. Caesar, assuming the Courier did as he asked, sent him on his way for more tasks. The Courier returned to House. House's next step was to divert power from the El Dorado Substation as a failsafe, in case the NCR shut down power from Hoover Dam during the attack. Finally, he learned that the Second Battle of Hoover Dam was about to begin, so he sent the Courier for the final stage of the plan. He instructed the Courier to go to the Control Room and install a special override chip to give House remote control of the facility, and then flip the main power switch to awaken the robot army that lay dormant at the Fort to eradicate Caesar's Legion. After much fighting, the Courier defeats the Legion's commander and is met by the NCR Commander, General Oliver. He informs General Oliver that Hoover Dam now belongs to Mr. House, and hands him a written order of withdrawal, which is House's order for NCR forces to return to California and, in exchange, House will sell NCR water and electricity from Hoover Dam at an absorptive rate. Reluctantly, General Oliver agrees and retreats. Soon after, the NCR-Legion War ended with both sides retreating.
