In the eyes of her grandchildren, she was the silver hair-ed chubby-cheeked ammachi. She was the ammachi who when she heard the house gate open, would magically appear at the doorstep ready to welcome us with a hug and a kiss. She would quietly note what food each of us particularly liked so that the next time we came around, she would have made some extra for us. She was the ammmachi who would be collecting manjaadi kurus throughout the year so that by the time we would reach home for the summer holidays, there was a box full of those rubies to play with. She was the ammachi who taught us how to fill our time with crafts and stitching projects and encouraged us to showcase our talents during every year's kudumbayogam.

But, she was so much more than just our Ammachi. Before she took that role, she was a mother to four amazing children. She raised them with wisdom and love unsurpassed. She stood by their sides as a strong pillar as they grew up into parents and grandparents themselves. She along with Appacha taught them the importance of treating everyone with love and grace and putting the needs of others ahead of one's own. She extended that same motherly love to her nieces and nephews and then all of her children's spouses also.

And before becoming a mother, she was a wife. On hearing the story of how she came to be appachan's bride straight out of high school, it is not hard to imagine how anxious she might have been. Trying to see the world through her eyes, we saw a young girl travelling as a newly married couple to a part of the country she had never been to and that must have been so daunting. Despite being geographically far from what she knew as familiar, she bravely stood with Appacha, setting down roots and making friends as they started their own family.

Before making that choice, she was a young quiet girl who attended school at Baker school in Kottayam. She was a diligent student who loved mathematics. She never missed a chance to show us her skills at magically calculating sums in her mind. She was a loyal protective sister to her siblings and she was a doted-on daughter to her parents. Even into her golden years we could see how much she loved and cared for her first family that God placed her with. We all knew and felt the zeal and fervour with which she stood up for her brothers and sisters when they needed her.

And overarching above all this, she was a child of God.

She showed us through her life’s example that there is comfort indescribable in a relationship with our God and maker.
