He carved a miniature schooner out of a single 2x4--it even had miniature tables and chairs and working lights. He once shot two buck and two quail in one day. He went on a drop camp hunting trip in Colorado and shot an elk.

Stephen began working as a meat cutter shortly after high school for Safeway. He worked at many stores around Humboldt and Del Norte Counties until his retirement in 1999.
