Obituary

Sherry Lynn Jacobs, 59, of Bly Oregon, passed away on February 3rd, 2023 after a 13-month battle with cancer. Sherry fought to the very end and was surrounded by her loved ones until she took her last breath.

Sherry was born on June 28th, 1963 to Luther (Ralph) and Catherine (Kay) Cole in Vallejo, California. She lived in Vallejo for ten years with her parents and sisters, Tami and Lindy, before relocating to Bly, Oregon in the summer of 1973. Sherry was very close with her sisters and cousins. They had a bond that could never be broken. You would have never known by looking at Sherry that she was born weighing 10 lbs 3 ozs. She was small but mighty. There was nothing that she couldn’t do on her own. When she was young, Sherry enjoyed watching Scooby-Doo while eating her favorite cereal, Captain Crunch.

On August 12th, 1980 Sherry was blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Stephanie Lynn. She was the light of her life for two short months before she sadly passed away from SIDS on October 12th. On April 9th, 1983 Sherry became a mom again when her son Skylar was born. Nolan followed eighteen months later on November 4th, 1984. Sherry was a proud and devoted mom to her children; always their biggest fan. She attended every ballgame, school event, and was there for every milestone they achieved.

Sherry started her career with the US Forest Service in August of 1983. Her first position was on the survey crew in the engineering department. In the early 90s, Sherry transferred to silviculture where she worked in reforestation. After a few years, Sherry made a switch to Fire. She loved her career and was promoted to Engine Captain in 2003. She retired in June of 2020 after 20-plus years in the field. Friends and colleagues that worked with her described her as an amazing employee. She was a mentor to the younger firefighters that joined the crew and was always a second mom to them. Sherry loved fighting fire and was respected by her colleagues for her dedication and hard work. She could run a chainsaw as well or better than most men and she dominated the pack test every year even after a car accident that left her with a broken femur, tailbone, and shattered foot.

As her children got older, Sherry spent as much of her free time as she could helping her son Nolan, his wife Michelle, and their four beautiful children on their farm. She was hands-on while running the equipment and entertaining her grandkids. Sherry also loved helping her son Skylar with his woodcutting business. They spent lots of time together in the woods cutting down firewood for Skylar’s business and Sherry’s house. Sherry was also a doting grandma to Gracie, Sawyer, Gus, Wade, and Holly. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and spoiled them with love, affection, and of course the most amazing Christmas presents. Sherry enjoyed watching her grandchildren play t-ball, volleyball, wrestling, and football.

Sherry had a passion for life. She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends. She loved the beach, slot machines, hunting, and fishing. She spent countless hours in the great outdoors with her boys and grandchildren. Sherry was always at her niece’s and nephew’s sporting events cheering them on. She even made sure to support her great-nieces and nephews. You could always count on Sherry to take the time to make everyone feel special and loved. She was such a compassionate and caring person who was always there to lend a helping hand.

Sherry was an active member of the Bly Fire Department and had previously driven for the Bly Ambulance. She loved playing pinochle, bingo, bunco, and canasta with friends and family. Sherry loved working in her yard and took great pride in growing beautiful flowers. She acquired her green thumb from her parents and spent several hours throughout the years helping them in their yard. Sherry would also buy them flowers every year to add to their beautiful collection.

One of the highlights of Sherry’s life was her girl’s trips. During the last 20 years, she was able to visit several places along the California coast, Tahoe, Arizona, Palm Desert, Hawaii, South Carolina, Mexico, and Grand Cayman, as well as seven different locations in Florida including three trips to St. Pete Beach. Her most recent trip was to Indian Rocks Beach in Florida this last October with her sisters Tami and Lindy, five nieces, Chrissy, Kim, Melissa, Sarah, and Karyssa, her cousin Shelli, and her very close friend Troy.

Sherry is survived by her parents Ralph and Kay Cole. Son Skylar Jacobs of Klamath Falls; son, Nolan Jacobs and Wife Michelle of Redmond; grandchildren, Gracie, Sawyer, Gus, Wade, and Holly. Sister Tami Nixon and brother-in-law Bill of Bly; sister Lindy Gomez and brother-in-law Lonnie of Klamath Falls. Nieces and Nephews, Chrissy (Kyle), Kim (Matt), Melissa (Steve), Sarah (Brandon), Kyle (Taryn), Karyssa (Sergio), Great nieces and nephews, Luke (Cassidy), Quentin, Kailyn, Clayton, Corina, Mason, Henry, Callie, Wyatt, Paisley, Krue, Kannon, Kendall, and baby C. She also leaves behind her great friend Troy, and numerous other friends that were like family to her. She was preceded in death by her daughter Stephanie, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and her special friend Rhonda Vickerman.

Sherry’s service will be held at 2 p.m. on March 4th, 2023 at the Bly Community Center. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her kindness, generosity, and infectious smile will be remembered by those whose lives she touched. May she rest in peace.
