Ruth Ann Kohnen, AKA Ruthie and Sissy (née Pitsenbarger), 74

Born on March 18, 1951, in Bellburn, West Virginia, Ruth grew up surrounded by the warmth and love of a large family. At the age of 18, she embarked on a new journey by moving to Chicago with her grandmother. There, she built a life filled with new friendships and community, living for many years in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs before relocating to Salisbury in 2021 to live with her sister Carol.

Ruth's Family

Family was the cornerstone of Ruthie’s life. She was previously married to Edward, and together they raised three daughters: Tanya (Brian), Michelle (Mary), and Samantha (Adam). Ruth poured her heart into motherhood, nurturing strong and independent women who carry forward her spirit. Her love extended deeply to her grandchildren—Jake (25), Sierra (24), Skylar (23), Dylan (20), Marley (18), and Kelsey (28)—whom she adored "to the moon and back." She took immense pride in their accomplishments and found great joy in celebrating their milestones. Ruth Ann aka Sissy, or Sis, shared an enduring bond with her siblings: Gary (Corina), Carol, Lyain (Barry), Ernie, Steve (Debbie), Tammy, Darceal, and David (Tammy). Family gatherings were among her most treasured moments—times filled with laughter, storytelling, and heartfelt connection. Her salon chair became more than just a place for beauty; it was a sanctuary where people laughed and cried freely and lifelong connections were made. Even after transitioning into the corporate world with MPC then Grainger, Ruth continued to style hair on the side, offering her talents and companionship to those who cherished and trusted her.
