Chester Eugene Mason, known fondly as Rock, passed away on September 7, 2024, at the age of 85. He was born on September 25, 1938, in Durango, Colorado to Eugene Chester Mason and Mable Lloyd Mason. Following his birth his family returned home to Seattle, WA where he would spend his formative years living on the Peugeot Sound. At age 17 he joined the Navy and was happily stationed in Hawaii. Now going by the name Rock (which he was nick named in the Navy for being unbreakable) he spent the next 6 years surfing, playing volleyball on the beach and studying art and modern dance at the University of Hawaii. Rock moved to Aspen, Colorado in 1965 where he initially worked as a Ski Instructor on Ajax Mountain. He soon set his mind on becoming a Carpenter in the Roaring Fork Valley which he would do for the next 40 years. In 1966 he met and fell in love with Ana Delya and her two children, Karen and David, it wasn't long after that his daughter Misty was born. He built a life. In 2000, after 40 years of living in the Roaring Fork Valley he and his wife moved to Grand Junction where they would live together until Ana passed in 2008, Rock continued living in Grand Junction until 2022. Due to early stages of memory loss Rock moved to Rifle Colorado to live with his daughter Misty and eventually into memory care and the VA. His Spirit was strong until he took his last breath.
Rock was a devoted husband to his wife Ana, father to his daughter Misty, step-son David & step-daughter Karen. He enjoyed being a grandfather to Ashley, Corey, Melissa and Sarah in their younger years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ana.
Rock was known for his unwavering faith and his belief that "you can trust in Jesus". This motto was reflected in his resilient spirit and his approach to life.
A passionate outdoorsman, Rock enjoyed spending his time bicycling, kayaking, hiking, and gardening. He was often seen riding his bicycle to church and the grocery store and was known for tipping his canoe over while paddling down the Colorado river with his feline companion, Matchka. His enthusiasm for the outdoors was matched only by his commitment to serving others, often lending a hand with community projects and engaging with his church.
Rock's strong personality was characterized by his honesty and hard work; he always spoke his mind and put 110% into everything he did. His unstoppable nature inspired those around him, and he will be remembered for his resilient spirit and determination to live life fully.
He leaves behind family, loved ones and friends that will greatly miss his presence and contributions. Rock lived life to the fullest, and his legacy of hard work, strength and determination will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
