Richard D. Crawford Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and accomplished professional, peacefully departed this life on January 3, 2025, at the age of 98. Born in November 1928 in Columbus, Ohio, Richard's life was a testament to integrity, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
A proud graduate of East High School, Richard's love for music, particularly big band jazz, led him to enlist in the U.S. Air Force the day after graduation. His service in the USAF Band as a clarinetist was one of his most cherished experiences, blending his love for music with his deep commitment to serving his country.
After his honorable discharge, Richard began a remarkable journey of personal and professional growth. Relocating to Detroit, Michigan, he briefly worked at Chrysler Corporation before returning to Columbus. He dedicated many years to the United States Postal Service before transitioning to International Telephone & Telegraph. Alongside his professional endeavors, Richard prioritized education, earning his Bachelor of Arts from Central State University and a Master's degree from Central Michigan University.
Richard’s career flourished as he achieved the prestigious designation of Certified Public Accountant, an accomplishment that symbolized his unwavering dedication to his craft. He later served as Finance Officer for the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, where his expertise and passion for public service left an enduring legacy. His contributions extended to his role on Columbus Mayor Rinehart's Leadership Council, exemplifying his commitment to civic engagement.
Richard was a proud member of the National Association of Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants, where he inspired peers and mentees alike. His career reflected not only professional success but also a profound impact on the community he loved.
Faith and family were the cornerstones of Richard's life. A devout Christian, he spent 71 remarkable years married to the love of his life, Eva, with whom he built a legacy of love, faith, and resilience.
Richard’s greatest pride and joy were his family. He leaves behind a loving legacy that includes his daughter, Sandra Penny (Gregory) of Southfield, MI; sons Richard Jr. (Laura) and Ken (Shelly) of Columbus, OH. Grandchildren Courtney (Sean) of Redford, MI; Carey (Theodis) of Southfield, MI; Bryce (Hallie) of Richmond, VA; Grant; and Evan (Nichole) of Chicago, IL. His cherished great-grandchildren are Cydnie, Cassidy, Shyla, Shiloh, Caleb, Rian, Devyn, and Keo.
Richard Crawford Sr. will be remembered as a man of integrity, intellect, and unwavering devotion to his family and community. His life was a beacon of light and inspiration to all who knew him, and his legacy will endure in the hearts of those he touched.
