Richard Brickman: A Renaissance Man Whose Legacy Lives On

In Loving Memory of Richard Hartman Brickman
(August 7, 1929 - December 8, 2023)

It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that we commemorate the life of Richard Hartman Brickman, known affectionately as Dick to his friends and family, who passed away peacefully on December 8, 2023, at the age of 94. Born on August 7, 1929, in Brooklyn, Richard's life was a rich tapestry woven with love, adventure, and an unwavering zest for life.

Dick's journey took him from the mean streets of Midwood, Brooklyn to the serene vistas of Kings Point, New York, when he convinced his father, Herman Brickman to buy a 30 acre waterfront property known as Hewlett Point, from Richard Church, the heir of the Arm & Hammer empire. When interviewed by the New York Times, Richard had this to say: ''It was such a wonderful magnificent place that I brought my father and mother to look at it, whereupon they bought it,'' Mr. Brickman said in an interview in Manhattan. Let's just say it was not a bad place to raise a family.

Aside from The Point, as we referred to it, he was fortunate to live in some other incredible places, including Manhattan, the sunny shores of St. Thomas, and the quaint charming town of Southbury, CT. Each place he called home was infused with his unique spirit, a testament to his renaissance personality.

A man of exquisite taste and diverse talents, Dick was an embodiment of a renaissance man. He had an eye for beauty, appreciating the elegance of antique furniture and unique tchotchkes. Stepping into Dick and Dolly’s apartment was like being transported to a bygone era, a world of refined aesthetics and cultural richness. His love for European culture, especially France, was evident in his appreciation of fine wines and his francophile delights.

The cornerstone of Dick's life was his family. His unwavering love for his wife of over 60 years, Dolly, was a beacon of enduring partnership. He was a loving patriarch to their three children, Art, Brad, and Cathy, a doting grandfather to ten grandchildren, and a cherished great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren. His ability to build meaningful relationships extended not just to his immediate family but to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dick's passion for travel was infectious. Together with Dolly, he embarked on adventures that spanned the globe, sharing unforgettable experiences with each of their ten grandchildren. From the exotic streets of Morocco to the scenic cruises of the Caribbean, and the historic cities of Amsterdam, Paris, and London, Dick's wanderlust knew no bounds.

An advocate of an active lifestyle, Dick's presence was a familiar sight in St. Thomas, swimming laps at Magen's Bay and performing pushups on the beach. His vitality and love for life were as clear as the waters he swam in.

Dick's legacy as a master builder of homes in Great Neck is mirrored in the foundations he laid in the lives of his children and grandchildren, imparting wisdom and guidance in their own home ventures. Despite the challenges life threw at him, his positive outlook, sharp wit, and ability to connect through humor never waned.

As we bid farewell to Richard, Grandpa, Dick - whatever you called him, we invite you to share your memories and stories. His influence undoubtedly touched many lives, and it is in these shared recollections that his spirit continues to live on.

Please leave a note below to celebrate the life of a man who was not just a family member or friend but a source of inspiration, love, and joy to all.
