Graduated from West High School in 1964, where he lettered in wrestling. After High school Jay entered the United States Marine Corp where he was stationed in San Diego, California where he was trained as a ‘tunnel rat’. He later returned home and served in the Reserves until 1970XXX.

Early professional career he was a president of advertising and marketing at Salmons Do-It Yourself Centers where he honed an expertise in business management and leadership which he used throughout his life in owning and operating several businesses, including Gourmet Dining Out Club which was one of the first discount coupon clubs in the valley. Later he moved his career and business endeavors into something he could use his artistic creativity to deliver a needed product. Such was, building and sculpting mailbox pedestals and designer property fences.
Jay loved literature and poetry, having published short stories and poems of his own.
Raymond Jay Garn, passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 2, 2024 at the age of 78. Born August 13, 1946 to Horace3 and Emmadean Garn, he lived the majority of his lille in Salt Lake County, Utah
Jay graduated from West High School in 1964, where he lettered in wrestling and excelled in the dramatic arts. After high school, Jay enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he was trained as a tunnel rat to serve in the Vietnam War. While he was never deployed to war, he continued to serve was a reserve until 1970.
Jay married Janice Hardy in 1967, later divorced, and together they raised a daughter. Jay is survived by his daughter Jenni (John) Trentman, Grandson Anthony (MacKenzie) Hoskins, brother Stephen (Linda) Garn, Sister in law Chris garn, two great grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. Jay is preceded in death by his brother Robert “Mike” Garn, and his parents.
Jays early professional years worked for Salmon’s Do - It - Yourself centers with his final role there being president of advertising} and marketing. he used is talent in business and leadership to own and operating several busing several businesses throughout his life.
Known for his remarkable creativity, Jay had a passion for the arts, including literature and poetry, having published short stories and poetry of his own, and spent his retirement years indulging in his creativity through woodworking, painting, sculpting and laser cutting. He enjoyed gifting his creations to family and friends and explaining his process which often used unconventional material and methods.
Services will be held October 15, 2024 at Larkin Memorial Sunset Gardens (address). Visitation will begin at 9:45 AM chapel services and interment at 11 AM.
