Ralph David was an avid golfer spending as much time on the course as he could. Was winner of Virgil Open in the 1990s. He was also a devoted Ohio State University Alumni and fan. Fall and football are a part of the Johnson family thanks to Dad. Ralph David loved to tell stories and was an excellent story and joke teller.
Ralph David loved having a garden and growing his own veggies. He loved to eat green onions,, tomatoes and radishes straight out of the ground. His favorite foods included asparagus, mom,'s homemade mushrooms dip, and mashed potatoes with gravy. Dad's favorite snack was popcorn. Especially the popcorn that came from his dad's farm. He would never turn a good glass of scotch or bourbon! Ralph David's favorite meal was grilled brats and sweet corn. He once said he could eat that every day.
Ralph David enjoyed all types of music but I think his favorites were Jimmy Buffett, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Queen and of course The Ohio State University Marching Band.
Ralph David loved watching college football, the Chicago Cubs and Bears and any team one of his kids played on in school.
Ralph David loved his family and friends more than anyone else. But the OSU Buckeyes came in at a close second.
Ralph David made career in Agricultural Economics working as a Regional Manager for both the Olin Corporation and H.J. Baker. He was a devoted, dedicated and loyal employee
Ralph and Maryann Johnson were blessed with three beautiful Children: Rhonda Leigh Johnson (Steve Clark), Renee Lynn Johnson Barton and Channing Lewis Johnson (Jennifer).
Ralph David had two grandchild: William Pembroke son of Channing and Jennifer Johnson and Isabelle Grace Barton, daughter of Renee and David Barton.
Dad loved Butter Pecan Ice Cream. There was always some in the freezer.
Ralph David was the son of Ira Donald Johnson and Geneva Isabelle (Sousley) Johnson. Both formerly of Marion, Ohio.
Ralph David played basketball in high school, was a member of the FFA, enjoyed fishing for catfish with his dad and chilldren, liked hunting with his father, brother and nephews and later in life had many accomplishments in wood working.
Ralph David Johnson, born on December 18, 1936, in Marion, Ohio, passed away on September 10, 2024, with family by his side in Batavia, Illinois. A 50-year resident of Sycamore, Illinois, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, known for his warmth, humor, and vibrant personality.
Ralph David was married to the love of his life, Mary Ann (Belcher) Johnson, for 63 wonderful years. Together, they raised three children: Rhonda Leigh Johnson (Steven Clark) of Studio City, California; Renee Lynn Johnson Barton and her daughter, Isabelle Grace Barton, of Mishawaka, Indiana; and his son, Channing Lewis Johnson (Jennifer) from Chicago, Illinois, along with their son, William Pembroke of Cincinnati, Ohio. Ralph David is also survived by several nieces and nephews, whom he cherished deeply.
A dedicated alumnus of Ohio State University, Ralph David was passionate about college football, especially when it came to supporting the Ohio State Buckeyes. His love for sports extended to the Chicago Cubs and Bears. In his spare time, "aRDie", as he was known to many, was an avid golfer and enjoyed sharing his passion for the sport with others. He is a former winner of the Annual Virgil Golf Open. He was also very proud that in his life he made not one but TWO holes in one at Sycamore golf course!
Ralph David was also known for his storytelling ability and wit, often bringing joy to gatherings with his jokes and anecdotes. He had a deep appreciation for music, favoring artists such as Jimmy Buffett, Queen, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and of course, the Ohio State University Marching Band. He was actively involved in his community, participating in the Sycamore Music Boosters and the Sycamore Kiwanis Club.
Professionally, Ralph David made a significant impact in agricultural economics, working as Regional Sales Manager for both the Olin Corporation and H.J. Baker, dedicating his career to serving farmers across the globe. His proudest accomplishments included graduating from Ohio State University, cultivating a loving family, and enjoying life to the fullest.
Ralph David was a devoted family man who took immense pleasure in woodworking, gardening, growing his own vegetables, and sharing meals that included his favorite foods like grilled brats, sweet corn, asparagus, and his wife's homemade mushroom dip. He had a particular fondness for popcorn, especially that from his father's farm, and enjoyed a good glass of Scotch.
Ralph David will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter, and community involvement will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Visitation and Service will be held on Tuesday, September 17th at Anderson's Funeral Home, 211 S. 4th Street, DeKalb, IL 60115. Visitation 10:00 a.m.-Noon, Service at Noon and Reception following at Sycamore Golf Course.
