Phyllis Lorraine Austin, age 76, passed away peacefully at her home in Ladson, South Carolina, on May 21, 2025. Born on December 20, 1948, in New York, New York, Phyllis was the beloved daughter of the late Chauncey Austin and Isabell Austin. She was the fifth of nine children and was raised in the Manhattanville Housing Projects in Harlem, where she developed the strength, resilience, and deep sense of community that would define her life.
Phyllis attended Central Commercial High School and later earned her degree from Bronx Community College. She then moved to the Bronx, where she spent the majority of her life building a home rooted in love, family, and service. She was known for her compassion, kindness, and unwavering support of those around her. For many years, she worked as a lab technician, serving her local community with dedication and professionalism. Her gentle spirit and strong work ethic left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Phyllis was always laughing, smiling, and dancing—truly the life of the party. She loved to shop and enjoyed sharing those moments with friends and family, bringing joy wherever she went. During holiday gatherings, Phyllis knew she had to bring her famous carrot cake, a beloved tradition that everyone looked forward to.
Above all, Phyllis was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her daughter, Anika Jones, and grandson, Jayden, were the lights of her life. She played a central role in Jayden’s upbringing, offering boundless love, guidance, and a steady presence that reflected the heart of who she was.
She is survived by her daughter, Anika; her grandson, Jayden; and her beloved siblings—Gwendolyn Ingram, Marilyn Campbell, Cheryl Headley, Gloria Austin, Deborah Austin, and Eugene Austin.
Phyllis’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love, family, and community. Her warmth, grace, and strength will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew and loved her.
