Peter loved spending time in nature. In particular, his love of plants began when he worked as a botanical assistant at the NS Museum while attending university at St. Mary's and Mt. St. Vincent. Nature was his place of peace. Peter had a passion for writing, self-publishing one children's story, Max, and several others written for the pleasure of writing.
Peter was an avid singer, spending years singing barbershop music with the Dukes of Kent. Music has always been his passion since early childhood. He always had an instrument to play and a choir to sing with wherever he lived in the world.
Peter was the son of Terence A. Shute and Margaret Louise Neish, both deceased. Peter had four children: Nathanael (Lindsay), Calgary, Emily (Jen), St. John, Benjamin, Halifax, and Lily, New Minas. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Susan Zimmermann, and brothers Kevin (Michelle), Calgary, Christopher, Halifax, and sister Leslie, Halifax. Peter was predeceased by his older brother, Michael (Janet).
Peter loved nothing more than reading a good book or learning something interesting. He was not the kind of person who was ever bored.
Peter has travelled the world with his wife, Susan. From his first trips as a volunteer teacher with the Canadian Teachers' Federation to Sierra Leone, where he helped raise money to build a school, and to India and Malawi, to his time living and working in Bahrain and Canada's north, his favourite place has always been to return to Nova Scotia.
Peter loved following his favourite teams, win or lose: The Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Raptors, and the Blue Jays.
Peter was a teacher and school administrator. He began his career as a kindergarten teacher and, in the end, taught junior high math and science. He taught and served as vice-principal at Smokey Drive and Gertrude Parker Elementary schools in Lower Sackville, Fort Sackville School in Bedford, and Shannon Park in Dartmouth. He became the Dean of Students at Bayan School in Bahrain and completed his educational service at Jaanimmarik School in Kuujjuaq, QC. After retirement, he followed his wife's career to Indonesia and China before returning to Nova Scotia.
Peter was a kind, thoughtful person. You could always count on him in a time of need.
Peter maintained life-long friendships with Derek and Kim Carter (Halifax), Rene Belliveau (Meteghan River), and Dr. Pierre Taschereau (Ottawa-Halifax), whom he looked after once he developed dementia. Wherever he lived and worked, he developed close bonds with someone important to him.
Peter Shute, born on January 2, 1953, in Halifax, NS, Canada, passed away in New Minas on January 4, 2025. He was the son of the late Terence A. Shute and Margaret Louise Neish and is predeceased by his older brother, Michael (Janet).
Peter was a devoted husband to his best friend, Susan Zimmermann, and a loving father to his four children: Nathanael (Lindsay), Emily (Jen), Benjamin, and Lily. He is also survived by his brothers Kevin (Michelle) and Christopher, along with his sister Leslie.
A passionate teacher and school administrator for 35 years, Peter began his career as a kindergarten teacher and completed it as a junior high math and science teacher. His dedication to education took him from the halls of Smokey Drive and Gertrude Parker Elementary schools in Lower Sackville to the role of Dean of Students at Bayan School in Bahrain, culminating in his service at Jaanimmarik School in Kuujjuaq, QC. After retirement, he followed Susan to Indonesia and China, but his heart was glad to return to his beloved Nova Scotia.
Peter had many passions, finding joy in nature, music, and sports. An avid singer, he spent years performing barbershop music with the Dukes of Kent and was known for always having an instrument in hand. He loved a good book or learning something new, and his vibrant spirit ensured he was never bored. A loyal fan of the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Raptors, and Blue Jays, Peter followed his favourite teams win or lose.
Known for his kindness, Peter had a unique gift for being present for others in times of need, a true superpower that endeared him to many. He leaves behind a legacy of love and a passion for life that will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.
Following cremation, a Celebration of Life will be held at White's Funeral Home in Kentville. The date will be announced.
