Peter's favorite hobbies

Peter loved spending time in nature. In particular, his love of plants began when he worked as a botanical assistant at the NS Museum while attending university at St. Mary's and Mt. St. Vincent. Nature was his place of peace. Peter had a passion for writing, self-publishing one children's story, Max, and several others written for the pleasure of writing.

Peter was an avid singer, spending years singing barbershop music with the Dukes of Kent. Music has always been his passion since early childhood. He always had an instrument to play and a choir to sing with wherever he lived in the world.

Peter was the son of Terence A. Shute and Margaret Louise Neish, both deceased. Peter had four children: Nathanael (Lindsay), Calgary, Emily (Jen), St. John, Benjamin, Halifax, and Lily, New Minas. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Susan Zimmermann, and brothers Kevin (Michelle), Calgary, Christopher, Halifax, and sister Leslie, Halifax. Peter was predeceased by his older brother, Michael (Janet).

Peter loved nothing more than reading a good book or learning something interesting. He was not the kind of person who was ever bored.

Favorite place in the world

Peter has travelled the world with his wife, Susan. From his first trips as a volunteer teacher with the Canadian Teachers' Federation to Sierra Leone, where he helped raise money to build a school, and to India and Malawi, to his time living and working in Bahrain and Canada's north, his favourite place has always been to return to Nova Scotia.

Peter was a teacher and school administrator. He began his career as a kindergarten teacher and, in the end, taught junior high math and science. He taught and served as vice-principal at Smokey Drive and Gertrude Parker Elementary schools in Lower Sackville, Fort Sackville School in Bedford, and Shannon Park in Dartmouth. He became the Dean of Students at Bayan School in Bahrain and completed his educational service at Jaanimmarik School in Kuujjuaq, QC. After retirement, he followed his wife's career to Indonesia and China before returning to Nova Scotia.

Peter was a devoted husband to his best friend, Susan Zimmermann, and a loving father to his four children: Nathanael (Lindsay), Emily (Jen), Benjamin, and Lily. He is also survived by his brothers Kevin (Michelle) and Christopher, along with his sister Leslie.
