Attended Jamaica High School in NY, graduated in 1948. Attended NC State University, Class of 1952, majoring in textile chemistry and textile engineering.
Served in the US Army during the Korean War, honorably discharged in 1960 at the rank of Captain. Commended for his work on the bulletproof vest and logistics.
Founded Paul Lavitt Mills in 1961, a successful hosiery manufacturing business in Hickory, NC. Employed over 240 employees until it closed in 2006.
Helped start the Hosiery Technology Center (now Manufacturing Solutions Center). Past president of the Catawba Valley Hosiery Association. Received the Distinguished Man of the Year award in 1995.
President of the Hickory Jewish Center. Member of Temple Israel in Charlotte and B'nai Torah in Boca Raton. Supported Israel, AIPAC, and US Maccabiah sports.
Survived by two sons and their wives, Arthur and Julie Lavitt, and Howard and Jodi Lavitt. Also survived by grandchildren Brent Lavitt, Jacqueline and Steve Michaelsen, Austin Lavitt, Jake Lavitt, and Brandon Lavitt. Brother Leonard and his wife Rita also survive him.
