Obbie M Blanton III, affectionately known as Butch and PopPop, passed away on September 20, 2024, at the age of 59. Born on September 21, 1964, in Wilmington, NC, Obbie spent his life dedicated to family, community, and service. He most recently resided in Winnabow, NC.

Obbie's passion for law enforcement began with the Carolina Beach Police Department, where he launched his career and later retired as a lieutenant with the Wilmington Police Department. He was deeply committed to mentoring future law enforcement officers as the Director of the BLET program, shaping the lives of many students who sought to follow in his footsteps.

A devoted family man, Obbie cherished his time spent with his five granddaughters, who brought immense joy to his life. He loved traveling on road trips with his dad, camping in their fifth wheel with his wife, Valerie, and enjoying moments with his beloved dogs. Obbie had a keen interest in history and found peace in the simple pleasure of smoking a cigar while driving in his car.

He is survived by his mother, Mary S Blanton; his sister; and his children, Jared, Rachel (Chris), Olivia (Zack), Ashley, and Frank, along with several nieces and nephews. Obbie's legacy will live on through the proud accomplishments of his children and the positive impact he made as an instructor.

Known for his quick wit, hard work, and loyalty, Obbie was a passionate individual who not only contributed to his community through his work but also through his involvement in his church choir and helping video church services. His dedication to both family and service will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
