Nathan joined the U.S. Airforce on August 3rd, 1953. He served until being honorably discharged on August 2nd, 1957. During his time in active duty he was promoted to Staff Sergeant, 4 stripes and spent 1.5 years in Japan. He studied at Eastern Oregon College receiving his teaching degree and a Masters in Education. After teaching for five years he received the opportunity to become an assistant librarian at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. There he continued his education receiving a Masters in Library Science and a Ph.D. in Zoology. He served as Dean of The School of Library Science for 11 years.
