Obituary

Obituary for Michael

Michael was born in Asheville, North Carolina, where he spent his childhood surrounded by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As a young boy he excelled in school, spent hours riding his bike up and down the steep neighborhood hills, and enjoyed simple childhood adventures such as making mud pies with his little sister, Susan. Those early years in Asheville shaped the curiosity, resilience, and quiet warmth that would remain with him throughout his life.

Michael later built a life defined by service and travel through his career in the United States Navy. While serving, he discovered one of the most meaningful chapters of his life when he met his wife, Kathryn. Both had joined the Navy around the same time and, in a twist of fate, were members of the Naval Band, where Michael proudly played the tuba. Their romance began during training in Norfolk, Virginia, and although distance separated them for a time, their connection endured. Just a few short months later, they were married, beginning a partnership that remained deeply meaningful to Michael.

During his naval career, Michael traveled widely and experienced many parts of the world. Of all the places he visited, one stood out above the rest: Treinta y Tres, Uruguay. He often spoke fondly of the kindness of the people there and the wonderful food he enjoyed during his time in the region. The memories he made there stayed with him for the rest of his life and were stories he loved to share with his niece.

In his later years, Michael lived in Atlanta, Georgia, carrying with him a lifetime of experiences, stories, and reflections from his travels and service.

Although much of Michael’s life was spent apart from extended family after the passing of his mother, Ruby, time eventually brought healing. He reconnected with his sister, Susan Paterson of Hillsborough, North Carolina, two years before her passing. That reunion meant a great deal to him, allowing him to rebuild family bonds that had long been absent. Through this reconnection, Michael also embraced his relationship with his niece, Diane, also of Hillsborough. Despite years of distance, their renewed family connection became an important and cherished part of his later life.

Michael will be remembered for his service, his stories of travel, his love for music, and the enduring connections he ultimately rebuilt with those closest to him. His life reminds us that even after time and distance, family and shared history can still bring people back together.

He leaves behind those who remember him with reflection, compassion, and the quiet understanding that life’s paths can circle back in meaningful ways. Michael is survived by his niece Diane Obeid of Hillsborough, NC. Preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Kathryn, and his sister Suzie (Susan).
