Melissa Carol Smith, known affectionately as Mel, was born on April 11, 1981, in Laurinburg, NC. She passed away tragically in a car accident on July 10, 2024, at the age of 43, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Most recently residing in Laurel Hill, NC, Melissa was a devoted mother and a loving partner to Johnathan Scott, who also lost his life in the same tragic event.
A compassionate and fun-hearted individual, Melissa found immense joy in spending time with her children, Lacy Haney, Bjorn Reginald Scott, and Anissa Scott, as well as her grandsons, Levi and Lyric Haney. Her proudest accomplishments were undoubtedly her children, whom she cherished deeply.
Melissa had a passion for gardening and traveling, with the beach holding a special place in her heart as her favorite getaway. Her love for her mamas home cooked southern meals was matched only by her love for family and her faith in God. As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), she dedicated her career to caring for others, embodying her motto, “The most important thing is to enjoy your life—to be happy—it’s all that matters.” She believed in authenticity, often reminding others, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
Throughout her life, Melissa was known for her unwavering support and ability to listen, serving as a shoulder to cry on for many. She faced hardships with resilience and emerged with a shining spirit. Her vibrant personality shone through in every holiday and family event, where she was the first to volunteer, lovingly decorating and creating joyous atmospheres for all to enjoy.
Melissa is survived by her mother, Daphne Smith, whose heart will forever carry the love and spirit of her beloved daughter. While she may have departed from this world, Melissa's impact on the lives of her family and friends will endure, a testament to her caring nature and loving heart.
In her absence, the family asks that you remember Melissa for her joy, laughter, and the light she brought to all who knew her.
We'll plant real trees for you in Melissa's memory and display your contribution forever.
