Maybell Davis-Payne was born October 12, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the 9th born of eleven siblings to the loving union of Grover Davis Sr. and Maybell Brannum Davis.

Practical Nursing School at Central Vocational Highschool.
She later worked for 14 years at Deaconess Hospital becoming the first black surgical nurse. Maybell then worked at Mt. Auburn Health center then on to Delta Airlines where she later retired.

Maybell had four children from her first marriage. Grandison (Cathy) Embry Ill, Karen Embry, Vicki Surrell (Andrew) and John Embry.

She married her best friend and soulmate Thomas Payne on August 27, 1974.
She was a devoted loving wife, mother and sister. She was a very particular person especially about her appearance and home.
She was preceded in death by her parents Grover Davis Sr and Maybell Brannum - Davis, and loving siblings Grover (Peaav) Davis. Purcell (Rubye) Davis, Jessie Moore, Mary Lovett, Marian (David) Williams, Benson "Greek", Davis, Ethel Davis Delores (Lacey) Calloway. She is survived by her loving husband whom never left her side, Thomas Payne, her children Grandison (Cathy), Karen, Vicki ( Andrew), Johnny, siblings Calvin (Laura), Madeline (Albert -deceased) Davenport, Peggy ( Grover-deceased) and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. nieces, nephews, & special friends!
Maybell Davis-Payne, born on October 12, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on October 21, 2024, in her hometown. The ninth of eleven siblings in the loving family of Grover Davis Sr. and Maybell Brannum Davis, Maybell was a beacon of warmth and devotion throughout her life.
A dedicated mother, Maybell had four children from her first marriage: Grandison (Cathy) Embry III, Karen Embry, Vicki Surrell (Andrew), and John Embry. She cherished her family and loved spending time reminiscing with her siblings. Maybell married her best friend and soulmate, Thomas Payne, on August 27, 1974, and they shared many wonderful years together.
Maybell was not only a loving wife and mother but also a trailblazer in her profession. She made history as the first Black surgical nurse at Deaconess Hospital, where she worked for 14 years, before continuing her career at Mt. Auburn Health Center and later retiring from Delta Airlines.
Outside of her professional achievements, Maybell had a passion for life. She loved cooking for her family, shopping on HSN, and above all, traveling and exploring new places. An avid Bengals football fan, she enjoyed her season tickets, never missing a game.
Maybell is survived by her beloved husband, Thomas Payne, her four children, siblings Calvin (Laura), Madeline (Albert - deceased) Davenport, Peggy (Grover - deceased), and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and several loving siblings, including Grover (Peaav) Davis, Purcell (Rubye) Davis, Jessie Moore, Mary Lovett, Marian (David) Williams, Benson "Greek" Davis, and Ethel Davis Delores (Lacey) Calloway.
Maybell's legacy of love, strength, and determination will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
