Matthew "Matt" Jon Bates, age 27, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on June 16, 2024. He was born on November 22, 1996, in Indianapolis to Jon and Angela Bates. Matt was a joy to be around, always eager to make you laugh. 

Matt was a proud graduate of St. Matthew School, Bishop Chatard High School and Ball State University. He had an aspiring career in construction management, having worked at Miller Eads, Long Electric and Shiel Sexton. 

In his free time, Matt enjoyed creek stomping with his beloved golden retriever, Sadie Girl, walking and riding along the Monon Trail and spending time with his family. More than anything, he loved watching his nephews in all their sports, never missing a game. 

Matt is survived by parents, Jon and Angela Bates; sisters, Katherine O'Brien (Kevin) and Anna Tarpey (Christopher); brother, Joseph Bates; niece and nephews - John “Jack,” Luke, Connor, and Margaret O'Brien, and Joseph “JJ”, Oliver, and Henry Tarpey; grandmother, Arlene Bates, 20 aunts and uncles and 24 cousins. He is preceded in death by grandparents Elizabeth and Gerald Mattingly and Donald Bates.

Visitation and services will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church at 4100 E. 56th St, Indianapolis, IN 46220, on Friday, June 21st from 4:00pm-7:00pm and a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 10:00am, followed by burial at Flanner & Buchanan Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
