Visiting home (Mississippi)
Mary Johnson was born to the late James and Dora Rist of Summit, Mississippi on July 2, 1927.
Mary Johnson, known affectionately as Mary Dee, May Dee, Lady Bird, Aunt Mary and Grandma, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at the age of 97.
Mary had a deep love for spending time in her yard, tending to her plants. It was in her garden where she found solace and joy. In conversations She would often say, "He/She is crackish," a phrase used to describe a person who doesn't have common sense.
Mary was a remarkable entrepreneur and had a successful career in property management. Among her many achievements, she was particularly proud of opening her own restaurant ( Johnson's Restaurant) and a bar named (Cleo's Lounge) showcasing her passion for hospitality.
Mary was preceded in death by her late husband, Cleo Johnson. Together they shared a beautiful life, and though she grieved his loss, she carried his memory in her heart.
Mary was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her son, Dennis Johnson Sr., and his children Kesha, Dennis Jr., Chase, Tanesha, and Miracle.
She was also preceded in death by her brother Charles Rist, sister Ethel Rist and her daughter, Chana Johnson, but leaves behind her granddaughter, Lil Chana Johnson.
Mary will be dearly missed by her close family members, including her brother, James (Vita) Rist and a host of great-grand children, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Mary's favorite place in the world was visiting her beloved Mississippi, her true home, where she enjoyed her family and friends.
