Gardening, painting, carving and crafting. She loved to share these passions and talents with relatives and friends. She even shared her talents in activities while living at Southampton Estates. She was once asked to cut out some red hearts for Valentine’s Day decorations and before they knew it, they had an abundance of hearts that year all over the unit.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; Alfred O. Smith and Violet Alberta Cressman; her sisters Joyce Elaine Healy, Barbara Joan Santee, and brother, Alfred Smith. Survived by Marilyn Smith Balaban, Judith Smith Brosey; brothers in law, Philip Balaban & Greg Brosey. While she had no children herself, she is survived by many nieces and nephews who love their Aunt Mary dearly. She went to college long before most women thought to and helped paid for it by working as a server at the NJ shore in summer. She graduated from West Chester Teachers College in Westchester, PA with a teaching degree and taught in the Philadelphia school system for over 40 years. Her connection with young people appears again when students at Northeast High, many of them, attended her 90th birthday party just last year. She lived in Bucks County most of her life where her roots were. She was a life long Democrat, believed and supported equal rights and democracy.
Mary loved nothing more than
Being in nature whether it be in her back yard, the Blue Ridge Mountains or Long Beach Island. She connected with nature wherever she was. She also loved nothing more than to help others.

Mary was a teacher at Northeast High School. She was the Health Education teacher and coached softball, bowling & gymnastics. She was an Eagles fan always.

Mary Ellen Smith, born on October 18, 1933, in Perkasie, PA, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2024, in Southampton, PA. A beloved figure in her community, Mary dedicated over 40 years of her life to teaching in the Philadelphia school system, where she inspired countless students as a physical education teacher and coach for softball and gymnastics. Many of her former students, recognizing her profound impact on their lives, attended her 90th birthday celebration just last year.
A graduate of West Chester Teachers College, Mary was a pioneer for women in education, earning her degree while working as a server at the New Jersey shore during the summers. Her commitment to education and equal rights was evident throughout her life, as she was a lifelong Democrat who believed in democracy and championed equal rights for all.
Mary was not only an educator but also a passionate artist and gardener. She loved to share her hobbies, which included painting, carving, and crafting, with her friends and family. Her creativity shone brightly during her time at Southampton Estates, where she once transformed a simple request for Valentine’s Day decorations into an abundance of red hearts that filled the unit with joy.
Mary's love for music was boundless; she enjoyed all genres, often singing and tapping her foot to the rhythm of her favorite songs. She cherished nature and found solace in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Sanibel Island & even her back yard. She often connecting with her surroundings during her time outdoors.
Preceded in death by her parents Alfred O. Smith and Violet Alberta Cressman, and her siblings Joyce Elaine Healy, Barbara Joan Santee, and Alfred Smith, Mary is survived by her sisters Marilyn Smith Balaban and Judith Smith Brosey, brothers-in-law Philip Balaban and Greg Brosey, and numerous nieces and nephews who adored their Aunt Mary.
Mary Ellen Smith will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her students, her artistic spirit, her love of nature, and her generous heart that always sought to help others. She married her long-time partner Anna Marie following the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of marriage equality in 2015, solidifying a love that spanned decades. Mary's legacy of kindness, creativity, and commitment to education will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
