Mary Anne Hughes, beloved mother, grandmother, and community leader, passed away on June 15, 2024, at the age of 80. She was born on October 30, 1943, in Kingston, Jamaica, and most recently resided in Chesapeake, VA.
Mary had a zest for life and enjoyed various hobbies, with bowling being one of her favorites. She also had a deep appreciation for music, particularly Whitney Houston's soulful tunes. In her younger years, Mary even had the pleasure of dating Denzel Washington.
Nothing brought Mary more joy than spending time with her cherished grandchildren. She loved them dearly and cherished every moment shared with Jayden Chappell and Gabby Nicholson.
Mary had a special connection to France, considering it her favorite place in the world. She also found solace in watching the TV show Criminal Minds and was an avid football fan.
Professionally, Mary served as the Manager for the City of Chesapeake Trash Department. Her dedication and hard work earned her a well-deserved retirement at the age of 70. She took pride in her achievements, including graduating from Western Branch High School and obtaining an associate's degree in Business from Tidewater Community College.
As a woman of faith, Mary was a devout Christian and actively participated in the Full Gospel Kingdom Church. She had a beautiful singing voice and shared her talents in various church choirs throughout her life.
Mary will be remembered for her humble and bright spirit, always caring and loving towards others. She made a significant impact on her community, both through her professional role and her compassionate heart. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and dedication.
Mary Anne Hughes will be greatly missed by her children, Stephanie Chappell and Steven Chappell, as well as her grandchildren, Jayden Chappell and Gabby Nicholson. Her memory will forever be cherished by family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
In accordance with her life motto, "Live life to the fullest; you only have one life," Mary lived with purpose and brought joy to those around her. May she rest in eternal peace.
