Martha was a life-long learner and not afraid to try new occupations. Her list of careers included owning a daycare center, working as a bank teller for City National Bank, teaching home economics for Fulton City High School, offering cooking classes for the newly invented microwave in the 1970's, owning her own health food store named Natural Stuff, working as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of TN in Weakly, Obion, Lake, and Henry Counties. She also want on to serve as a Career Counselor for Dyersburg State and served as a sign language interpreter at several school systems in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Martha loved nothing more than

Helping other people through her incredible knowledge of sign language. The daughter of two deaf parents, she learned to sign early in life and volunteered at local churches and school systems whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Favorite place in the world

While Martha and Harry loved traveling, her favorite place was at home. She loved watching the many birds that frequented her yard, especially the hummingbirds.

Martha Jane Lacewell, born on February 14, 1941, in Murray, Kentucky, passed away on September 3, 2024, in her hometown. A dedicated life-long learner, Martha embraced a variety of careers throughout her life, including owning a daycare, working as a bank teller, teaching home economics, and serving as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open her own health food store, Natural Stuff, and she was passionate about empowering others through her knowledge of sign language, a skill she learned from her deaf parents.

Martha cherished her family above all else. She is survived by her beloved husband, Harry Lacewell; two sons, Steve Lacewell (Melissa) and Andy Lacewell (Shelley); and four grandchildren, Spencer, Trevor, Taryn, and Greyson, all of whom brought immense joy to her life. She is also survived by her sister, Bonnie McAlister of Franklin, Tennessee, along with several nieces and nephews.

An avid gardener and lifelong learner, Martha loved spending time in her flower garden and was never afraid to explore new interests. Her determination was exemplified by her completion of a Master's degree in Organizational Communications while working full time, a journey she shared with her son, Steve, as they both celebrated their achievements together.

Martha was a member of the University Church of Christ, where she often volunteered her time and talents. Known for her sweet spirit and infectious laughter, she touched the lives of many, always ready to lend a helping hand and share her warmth with those around her. Although she enjoyed travel, her favorite place remained at home, where she delighted in watching the many birds, especially the hummingbirds, that visited her yard.

Martha Jane Lacewell will be remembered not only for her numerous accomplishments but also for her kind heart and the profound impact she had on her family and community.
