Graduated from Daviess County High School (1970), received a B.S. in Biology from Centre College (1974), M.S. (1980) and Ph.D. (1982) in Plant Pathology from the University of Kentucky
Joined the faculty in Plant Pathology at the University of Arizona in 1986, retired as a professor in 2017
Married Hans Van Etten on August 11, 1990
Received the Pelton Award in 2012 from the Botanical Society of America, pioneer in work with border cells and nonsurgical methods to treat scoliosis
Loved wood carving, had a special place for all creatures and animals
Donated land to expand the Tucson Mountain Park in 2016
