Elected to Elgin City Council, member of various organizations including Elgin Junior Service Board, YWCA of Elgin, and United Way of Elgin
Married high school sweetheart John S. "Jack" Shales, had four children, two sisters, two brothers, fifteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and thirteen nieces and nephews
Received Cosmopolitan Distinguished Service Award, Elgin YWCA Marjorie Leonard Award for Volunteer and Community Service, Elgin YWCA Lifetime Achievement Award, and City of Elgin Image Award
