Mahala Austin, affectionately known as Mama, passed away on April 15, 2024, at the age of 92. She was born on January 27, 1932, in St. Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica. Mahala was a dedicated healthcare worker and spent her career caring for others. Her proudest accomplishments and contributions were providing for her family and supporting her church community.
Mahala resided in Brooklyn, NY, and was a beloved member of her community. Her infectious happiness and warm smile touched the lives of everyone she met. She was known for her giving nature, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Mahala cherished her family, and her love extended to her husband, Jacob Vincent Archibold Haynes, and their children: Samuel Johnson, Pauline Johnson, John Johnson, Claudette Johnson (Kenton), Mercedes Haynes-Ross, Sonia Haynes, Laurel Haynes, and Sandra Haynes. She was also blessed with 44 grandchildren who brought her immense joy.
Mahala will be deeply missed by her surviving family members, including her parents, Delores Leslie and Millicent Leslie, her siblings Lynette Anderson and Mavis Freeman, and the memory of her predeceased loved ones: Icilda Leslie, Jestina McNeil, Hubert Leslie, and Henry Leslie.
Mahala Austin's impact on the lives of others cannot be overstated. Her warm smile could brighten the darkest of days, and her generosity knew no bounds. She will be remembered as a loving and giving soul, forever cherished in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
