Obituary

Although his first name is Lynwood (with a "y" not an "I), he was more so known as Bell or Mr. Bell. He spent a good deal of his early life between Philadelphia and New York City, as well places nearby and in between. "Bell" attended Benjamin Franklin High School in NYC. During his college years he attended Virginia Union University in Richmond Va. After witnessing the service of one of his grandfather's funerals, he became interested in the Mortuary Service Field. Bell would eventually further his education by enrolling into Embalming school and more. After completing the course of study, he later became a licensed Funeral Director/Service provider in Pennsylvania, New York and Lasty North Carolina. While living in New York working in the funeral business he also served as a Cab/Taxi Driver, Bus Driver (if you needed to know where a place was, he could either tell you how to get there or close by). Bell eventually worked and soon became the owner of his own funeral home, formerly known as Henry A. Toppin, Memorial Chapels LTD, on Lenox Ave. New York, NY. While living in New York he married Cathrine Labat, and from this union his first two children were born, Lynwood Bell (August 1973). After that marriage ended, around the mid 1980's he remarried the recently departed Linda Cogdell-Davis (1985-2024), who would become the mother of their youngest son, Christopher Bell (February 1987). It was not long after Chris's birth that Mr. Bell relocated to Goldsboro, North Carolina and resumed operating as a licensed Funeral Director. Mr. Bell exemplified his experience and expertise which allowed him to work with multiple funeral homes in the Goldsboro and Mount Olive areas, such as Hamilton, Lightner, McIntyre, Powell, & J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home. He helped wherever needed, this included making floral deliveries. The funeral business also led him to become a notary and Burial Insurance writer. Bell would often offer assistance when needed to his close friend Mrs. Portia Hamm. As life kept moving on, he eventually met and married the late Gloria Jean Dawson (1992-1992), Bell is survived by his sons; Lynwood Bell III, Albert (Lakishia) Bell of Raleigh, NC and Christopher Bell of Goldsboro, NC, daughter; Ida Dawson-Rainey (Sylmer) of Lewes, Delaware and Charlene Dawson-Rowe (Ricky) of Dudley, NC, along with four grandchildren; Michael and Zariya Bell, Na'Tiana Barnes, Aquaveous Cogdell, Ayanna Dawson, four great grandchildren; Shyasia Dixion, Mason Dawson, ArMiana Dawson. Bell was a very interesting individual, who could be helpful and knowledgeable while funny at times. He will be dearly missed.
