Interesting facts about Luz

She always loved to be right and her favorite words were, "Te Lo Dije!" and because she was bilingual she said it in Spanish and English, "I Told You!". When she used to pick Daynia up from school, she would take her to McDonald's. In her broken English, she would fight with the cashier because the cashier, workers, or whoever would always get the order wrong, and she would always yell at them in her broken English. She loved her keeping her knitting and sewing tools in those green Export Soda and blue Royal Dansk tins- we never knew the name of those tins). In the summers, she loved eating limbers, piraguas, and coquito. She loved Word Finder books, (her palabritas), the books you find at the Dollar Store. She liked to paint porcelain figurines. She called Daynia's Troll dolls, el pelo suerto. She loved giving tickles. She always kept everything you could ever think of (garbage bags, empty Country croc tupperware) and refused to throw them away.

Luz loved nothing more than

Her family and speaking her opinion.

Favorite place in the world

Our family's house in Boqueron.

Favorite TV shows

She loved watching The Best Team Ever Los Yankees on television and in person games. She also loved Sabado Gigante.

Obituario

Luz Nereida Santana Nevarez, was born on May 24, 1939, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and passed away peacefully on January 4, 2025, in the Bronx, NY. Her parents were Juan Santana and Aleja Nevarez. Her siblings were Anna Santana, Lydia Santana, Elizabeth Santana, Angel-Luis Santana, and Angel-Manuel.

A beloved matriarch, Luz was known for her feisty spirit, stubbornness, and talents for cooking, knitting, and sewing that brought joy to her family and friends. You would often find her knitting supplies in big green Keebler Export Soda tins, or the round blue tin containers, which evidently were Royal Dansk shortbread cookies. However, no one knew the original name, just that the supplies were always found in one of those tins. She would effortlessly cook whatever was requested, because she did not allow anyone to visit her and leave hungry. She enjoyed creating hats, scarves, and dresses. She always found ways to keep herself busy.

Luz cherished her family above all, relishing in the time spent together in New York and Puerto Rico. Her cooking was legendary; she took pride in making limbers, coquito, sorullos, and anything a person could dream of. Her favorite treats were corn muffins, Chunky candy bars, and Ferrero Rocher truffles. For holidays, birthdays, celebrations, she always wanted her Valencia Bakery cakes. On her down time, she enjoyed reading to help her learn English and her Word Finder puzzles (palabritas). She loved playing dominoes, as well as painting porcelain figurines. She had an unyielding love for her morning ritual of Cafe Bustelo made the original way (the sock), alongside her favorite pan con mantequilla (bread with butter). She occasionally liked the Export soda crackers with it.

Her passion for baseball made her a devoted fan of Los Yankees, and she loved watching games both on television and in person. She enjoyed the live games, always finding seats in the nosebleed sections. Luz had a unique charm, often expressing her opinions boldly, without fear or shame, famously saying "Te Lo Dije!"/ "I Told You!" to those around her. She had a playful and competitive spirit. She fought so hard for her independence. She only asked for help when she truly needed it.

Luz was married to her husband, Radames Camacho, for 21 years, and together they shared 67 years of love and partnership. She is survived by her four children, Edwin Andujar, Elizabeth Francesconi, Miguel Calderon, and Jaime Andujar, along with her brother Rafael, her grandchildren, Eddie Jr., Falisha, Brian, Daynia, Serena, James, Adam, Cristina and Briann and her great-grandchildren, Milan, Xavier, Winter, Julissa, Cali, Adonis, and Jason all of whom she adored.

Known for her independent and opinionated nature, Luz left an indelible mark on the hearts of her family. Her home in Boqueron was her favorite place, filled with cherished memories spent with family, friends, and loved ones. Luz Nereida Santana Nevarez will be deeply missed, but her spirit and love will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew, loved, and cherished her.
