Cooking, kayaking, hiking, foraging, tinkering on his truck, creating woodworking projects/building things, vaneology [collecting bird feathers,] and gardening. He also enjoyed dirtbiking, although had only done so 1 or 2 times in past 6 years.
He tried to eat mostly healthy with organic foods, but oh how he loved his Miss Vickies salt & vinegar chips, sour candies and chocolate every weekend 😂. Midnight snacks included popcorn and plates of nachos!
Karl had a very eclectic taste in music genres but his favorite song was, "Guitar Town," by Steve Earle. He would work out to mostly remixes of songs from the 2000s but on road trips, he could range from Zach Bryon to Sublime to Hillsong Worship. When I first met him he was a total Swiftie but 🤫...he would never admit to that and I was supposed to keep it a secret 😂. His recent downloads were, "Drunk driving," by Koe Wetzel; "Dial drunk, " by Noah Kahan; and "Quitter," by Cameron Whitcomb; and "Ayo for Yayo," by Andre Nickatina....but mostly he just listened to YouTube music. He would ALWAYS let me be the DJ when I was with him but I had to play the songs he once-in-awhile wanted to hear [mostly older country songs]. The night we met, I had to attend a poetry reading for my English class. We were standing outside and he asked what I was doing and I told him. He simply said, "that sounds interesting' and so I invited him. Near the end of the open mic a young woman did an acoustic version of, "Can't Help Falling in Love," by Elvis, and here's another secret....when he later reminded me of that night and dedicated that song to me, it was one of the very few times I ever saw him get teary eyed. I STILL can't listen to it without crying.
Most didn't know that he really enjoyed Christian music. His favorite song was "Reckless Love," by Cory Asbury. I only ever saw him cry 3x: Once when he dedicated, "Can't Help Falling in Love with You," to me; once when he attempted to make his clean date on his Dad's birthday; and once when we were watching the "After" movie series. He absolutely LOVED the show, "Yellowstone," and wanted property. He loved philosophy and his favorite was Marcus Aurelius. He suffered from "sleep eating," and he would leave peanut butter all over the stove EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT. He preached being OCD clean but would leave water bottles everywhere and toothpaste all over the mirror and counter 😂!!
His family and friends, but mostly his son, Jonah and he had hoped to reunite with him.
I'm not sure he had a "favorite" place but he loved the beach, and he loved being out in nature. He enjoyed pretty much anything to do with outside. He wanted to travel and we were in the process of applying for his passport
Karl would always say he hated series, but yet his favorites were: Yellowstone, 1923, 1883, Tulsa King, Mobland, The Bear, Ozark, Goliath and Landman.
Karl wasn't much into "sports" per se, but when he was younger he enjoyed dirt biking and had hoped to get back into it. He enjoyed kayaking, hiking, and swimming. Recently, in treatment, he had made an extensive list of activities he may be interested in exploring: dancing, archery, pottery, fishing, woodworking, photography, playing an instrument, and soooo many more.
Although Karl preferred sci-fi movies such as Dune, Mad Max, Planet of the Apes, and Avatar, I don't think he's ever made it through a whole movie in our whole relationship ...... unless we saw it in the theater and only if he had enough popcorn to eat then he would be good! The last movie he slept through was Dune, Part 3 when we were on our trip to the coast.
We are heartbroken to share that Karl Clayton Eric Nordli, 45, passed June 28, 2025, while visiting Gibsons, BC after losing a hard-fought battle with addiction.
Karl came from a large family and will be lovingly remembered by: his son, Jonah; his gf of 6 years, Marni; his mother, Connie [Robert]; his brothers, Ivan [Nicole], Denny [Celina]; and James; and his sister Angelica [Chris], all of whom he loved very much. He also is survived by his nieces and nephews, whom he absolutely adored.
He was predeceased by his father, Kurt, grandparents, and his Uncle Ron.
He is survived by many aunts and uncles and friends.
Karl will be remembered for his quick wit, infectious laughter and his sometimes inappropriate jokes lol.
He was a talented architectal sheet metal worker who took pride in his work and was a perfectionist at his job.
He was a person who was imaginative and creative. His ability to bring an idea to life was a great of strength of his.
He was known among his friends as helpful, knowledgeable, and experienced in many areas.
In the days since Karl's death, he has been described as a bright light by those he walked alongside in the various centers he attended. What is also true is that Karl suffered from an insidious disease that often goes unnamed in obituaries. It is hidden under phrases like, "sudden," or unexpected" passing when the reality is, there was nothing sudden or unexpected about it. Karl passed from a mental illness and a drug addiction. Conditions that have lived in the shadows for far too long. This has only further stigmamatized a disease that is misunderstood and often dismissed as a personal failing or a weakness. It is neither. Karl deftly played down his battle with addiction, but he would want his life, as well as death, to bring light to the shadows, illuminating the darkness that too many of us silently sit alone in. The darkness that ultimately engulfed him and took him away from us. Karl had a supportive and loving family who he adored. He had things to look forward to. He had every reason to live. He had resources and access to treatment. Addiction still won. Addiction does not discriminate. No one is immune. Karl's addiction does not define his life - but it ended it. It stole his spark and left those who loved him broken-hearted yet determined not to turn our backs on this epidemic and the countless families, like ours, who find themselves in this situation.
