John Weidman was born on March 21, 1968, in Greenwich, CT, and passed away on September 24, 2024 near Philadelphia, PA. He was a loving father, devoted friend, and passionate leader in the nonprofit community.
John was the proud father of his 11-year-old son, Charlie, who will always be the light of his life. He shared a meaningful co-parenting relationship with his former wife, Ebony Staton. John was preceded in death by his father, John Weidman II and is survived by his mother, Dottie Weidman; his sister, Dana Weidman; and his brother, James Weidman; beloved cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Throughout his career, John was a passionate advocate and policy leader focused on sustainability, food access, and social justice. He played a pivotal role in launching farmers markets, night markets, and promoting initiatives like the soda ban in schools. His dedication extended to organizations such as Philabundance and The Food Trust, where he worked tirelessly to address food insecurity. John collaborated with government at all levels, including the Obama administration, to create positive change that would improve the lives of so many.
A lover of the arts and the outdoors, John enjoyed fishing with Charlie, snorkeling, and traveling, with the Bahamas being one of his favorite destinations. He was a political news junkie and an avid reader who found joy in exploring both fiction and non-fiction. Music was a constant in his life, with favorite bands including Pavement, Weezer, and Bob Dylan. John’s sense of humor shone through in his love for TV shows like Seinfeld, Arrested Development, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
John’s heart transplant at an early age shaped his worldview, fostering a complex connection to spirituality and an acceptance of his mortality. His determination, intelligence, and loyalty impacted many lives, and he was fulfilled by relationships with family, colleagues, and dear friends.
He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to creating positive change and for the love he had for his son, family, and friends. John’s legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him.
