John “Sonny” Richard Hason, Jr., 77, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2025 surrounded by his loving family and beloved dogs. Born December 27, 1947, Sonny was a Poquoson native and resident. In 1965, Sonny met his wife Lynda and went on to have 3 daughters together: Rhonda, Rachel, & Sunny Lee. Sonny was a lifelong waterman and a member of the Hampton Fire Department, retiring as a Lieutenant from Station 7 in 1997, after 30 years of service to his community. He always said his goal was to be retired as long as he worked. 

Sonny was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents William “Captain Porgy” and Iva Evans; parents John Sr. and Mildred Lee Hanson; and daughter Rhonda Hanson Forrest. He is survived by wife of 59 years, Lynda; children Rachel Finch (Jeff) and Sunny Lee Hanson; brother Garland Hanson (Leslie); grandchildren Devin Insley (Michael), John Mason Finch (Marissa), Emily Alejandro (Phillip) and Holly Freeman; great-grandchildren Carter Insley, Cooper Insley, and Arthur Alejandro; niece Caroline Hanson (Scott) and nephew William Hanson (Kayleigh).

Family will receive visitors at Emmaus Baptist Church in Poquoson, VA May 14, 2025 at 1pm, with a memorial service to follow at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Poquoson Fire Department.
