John Gordon Shattuck, Jr. (1951-2025), it is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of John Shattuck on August 28, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona, surrounded by his wife and children after a short but aggressive battle with colon cancer.
Born on September 30, 1951, in San Francisco, California, to Gordon and Dorthea Shattuck. John was an avid skier, sailor, traveler, photographer (engagingimages.us), trumpet and flugelhorn musician, and naturalist. He spent many years as a real estate broker, then later as a tour director. His specialty was providing tours in national parks; Yosemite was his absolute favorite. In his youth, John was a Quartermaster Sea Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, spending hours sailing on the San Francisco Bay; he enjoyed driving sports cars; and spending time in Mendocino. In his later years, John was heavily involved with the Adobe Masonic Lodge, Zen Desert Sangha, and volunteering at Sabino Canyon, as a naturalist. John loved spending time with his family, but most of all he loved showing the world to his granddaughters. Being Papa was his greatest joy.
John was a lifetime member and Past Master Councilor of San Francisco Chapter, Order of DeMolay and Past Master of Oriental Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons of California, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of San Francisco Bodies of the Scottish Rite.
John was the Worshipful Master of Adobe Lodge in 2005, 2006, and 2025. He served as the Senior Warden in 2004 and from 2007 until 2009. He was Grand Orator of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Arizona in 2006. John was the Charter Senior Warden for the Renaissance Lodge from 2009 until 2011.
John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Beth Shattuck; son, William Shattuck; daughter, Brooke Rosander; daughter, Hillary Bal (Craig Bal); granddaughters, Kelly and Caroline Bal; sister, Barbara Glass; nephew, Scott Glass (JJ Ramberg-Glass) and their children, Calder, Conner, and Clover; nephew, Stephen Glass; and numerous cousins.
