He was a devoted husband to Ricky Sue Martin, with whom he shared a loving marriage since 1975. Joe was a proud father to his daughter Gwen, son Ruben, and daughter Anita, as well as a cherished grandfather to two grandsons, six granddaughters, two great-granddaughters, and one great-grandson.

Joe had a zest for life that was infectious, characterized by his great sense of humor and his love for family. He enjoyed motorcycle rides, which brought him immense joy, and had a particular fondness for biscuits and gravy, pot roast, and Little Debbie snacks.
