Obituary

With heavy hearts filled with both sorrow and gratitude, we announce the passing of Ja’Quelle Antonio Cruz, known affectionately as “JJ,” who gracefully received his wings on February 23, 2026, ascending to his eternal home. Born on January 3, 2004, in the Bronx, NY, to Marta Johnson and José Cruz Jr., JJ possessed a spirit of immense character that left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to know him. His journey was one guided by faith and filled with an unwavering love that touched the lives of many. A student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, JJ was recognized for his sharp intellect and unwavering "Aggie Pride." Beyond excelling academically, he was valued for his charm, his warmth, and his high-spirited nature that earned him the endearing nickname of the “Teddy Bear.” When not immersed in his studies, JJ could be found pursuing his passions—whether under the hood of a car, racing ATVs with fervor, or achieving victory in the realm of video games. A protector and a loyal friend, he was rarely seen without his beloved cousins, sister, and "other half," Xe’Naida, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond as the infamous “Ying Yang Twins.” JJ leaves behind a legacy of love and memories cherished by his grieving family. He is survived by his parents, Marta Johnson and José Cruz; siblings, Julio and Xe’Naida Cruz; grandmothers Anita Johnson and Milagros Ortis-Amaro; aunts and uncles Erica, Khalil, and Eric Johnson, Teresa Kimble, and Robert White Jr.; as well as a host of cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends who will carry his spirit forward. In this time of mourning, may we take comfort in the belief that Ja’Quelle Antonio Cruz now rests in the loving embrace of the Divine, reunited with those who have gone before him. Though his physical presence may be missed, his light will continue to shine brightly in our hearts, guiding us with the lessons of his life and the love he shared so abundantly. May his soul find peace and eternal rest in the arms of the Creator, and may his memory be a source of solace and inspiration to all who mourn his passing. JJ's legacy will forever be remembered with reverence, gratitude, and enduring love.
