Raising a family
Janet Patricia Leyden, affectionately known as Janny, passed away on January 26, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on June 29, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, she spent her final years in Lindenhurst, NY.
Janet was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, cherished by her children Aimee (Robert Rychlowski), Peter (Kristina Breen), Paul, Mary, and John, as well as her grandchildren Sean, Megan, Erin, Connor, Benjamin, Kate and Andrew. She also held a special place in her heart for her great-grandchildren, Lucas, Layla, Logan, and Alijah. Janet was proud of her family and considered raising them her greatest accomplishment.
A devoted Catholic, Janet was exceedingly kind and generous of spirit. She dedicated her life to teaching and caregiving, having worked as a preschool teacher and cared for elderly nuns at the Queen of the Rosary Motherhouse. She generously supported her church and the USO, leaving a lasting impact on the Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Veteran communities.
Janet had a passion for reading, dancing, baking, and singing. She found joy in her favorite music, particularly from artists like Abba, Johnny Mathis, Neil Diamond, Roger Whittaker, and Sam Cooke. Her favorite foods included pecan turtles, caramels, and Mallomars, and she enjoyed a sweet treat of butter pecan ice cream.
She had many Godchildren around the world due to her work at New York Foundling Hospital and loved nothing more than spending time with her loved ones, sharing joy and laughter and creating fond memories. Janet enjoyed watching her favorite TV shows, including Bluebloods, Law and Order, and NCIS, and she had a particular fondness for Olympic figure skating.
Janet is survived by her loving husband, Peter A. Leyden, and her sisters, Nancy and Maryel, loving children, grand and great grandchildren. Her legacy of love, generosity, and her joyful spirit will long be remembered by all whose lives she touched.
