James Montgomery was born on September 8, 1932, to the late Amos Wright and Classie Montgomery Thomas in Wilcox County, Alabama. He transitioned from this life to Life Eternal on Friday, July 19, 2024, at a local hospital in Fairhope, Alabama. He graduated from Mobile County Training School in 1957. James was united in marriage to the late Elizabeth Matt Montgomery on June 23, 1959, and was blessed with seven children through this union. He confessed Christ at an early age and rededicated his life on January 29, 2021 by joining Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Daphne, Alabama. He retired from Radney Funeral Home in Mobile, Alabama where he worked as a dedicated porter for over 50 years. He also worked at K-Mart as a service tech in the automotive department.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos Wright and Classie Montgomery Thomas; his beloved wife, Elizabeth Matt Montgomery; his son, Sergeant Timothy James Montgomery; his granddaughter, Chelsea Montgomery; twelve siblings, Bennie Cook, Rob Montgomery, Mandie Matthews, Johnny Wright, Channie Phillips, Randolph Wright, Evelyn Steel, Mary Wright, Louis Wright, Moses Wright, Andrew Wright, and Elijah Wright; his aunt, Bennie Walker; close cousin, Bertha Montgomery Robinson; three sister-in-laws: Rose Lee Stanton, Mamie Vincent and Jettie Ree Withers; and three brother-in-laws, Billy Logan, Raymond Matt, and Sam Matt, Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memories 6 children, Reverend Larry (Cynthia) Montgomery, David Montgomery, Clifton Montgomery, Christa Montgomery, Kelvin Montgomery, all of Daphne, Alabama and Tiffany (Bishop Daniel) Richardson of Madison, Alabama; grandchildren, Brian (Gwendolyn) Longmire, Larry T. (Chanel) Montgomery, Kayla Montgomery, Carman Montgomery, Chauntel Montgomery, Cameron Montgomery, LaTrenna Montgomery, Kellye Pickett, Brianna Fleming, Myles Montgomery, and Gabriel Richardson; two siblings, Elizabeth (Hillery) Bailey and Mildred Lester of Detroit, Michigan; seven sister-in-laws, Selena (Walter) Stallworth of Daphne, Alabama, Ethel Dean Gibson, Clarine (Matthew) Kimbrough, Faustina Matt and Mary Matt of Detroit, Michigan, Rosetta (Jordan) Anderson of Arlington, Alabama, and Brenda (Warren) Johns of Daphne, Alabama; one brother-in-law, Roosevelt (Elmita) Matt of Nashville, Tennessee; devoted cousin, Bobby Walker of Selma, Alabama; two daughters-in-love, Geraldine Johnson and Pastor Regina Johnson, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
