James "Buck" Mays, a dedicated welder and beloved member of his community, passed away on March 28, 2024, at the age of 59. Born on June 30, 1964, in Eupora, MS, he was the son of both the late Joe Willie Mays and Lula Mae Mays.
Buck spent over 30 years working as a welder, most recently employed at Ellis Steel. He was known for his strong work ethic and often quoted his life motto, "It ain't gonna fall in your lap." Buck took great pride in his children, considering them to be his proudest achievements. He is survived by his daughters; Kontara Avant, JaNyla mays, and his son, Hakeem (Tanika) Mays. Buck had a special bond with his grandchildren, including Kontarion, Kamarion, Jarell, Tamia, Kingston, Tiana, Tahiry, and Tamora.
In addition to his professional accomplishments and his dedication to his family, Buck was actively involved in his community. He was a member of Third Mt Olive Baptist Church and coached for the city league youth sports team for basketball and baseball. Outside of work, Buck enjoyed fishing, watching wrestling, and raising and training his dogs.
With his hardworking and compassionate nature, Buck had a remarkable impact on the lives of those around him. He had a talent for making people laugh, even in the toughest of times. One memorable anecdote captures his humorous side when, after getting intoxicated, he told his reflection to move out of his way.
Buck will be dearly missed by his siblings, Mary Ann Smith, Mary Alice McComb, Betty Brown, Cora Crumble, Evaline Fuller, Erma D Mays, Hattie L Mays, Vanessa Mays Ervin, Willie A Mays, Willie L Mays, and Larry W Mays. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Minnie L Crumble, Carolyne Burchfield, Catherine Mays Embry, and Martha Helen Mays Cullum, as well as his brother, Joel L Mays.
Buck's legacy of hard work, dedication, humor, and compassion will be cherished by all who knew him. His presence in the community and his commitment to making others smile will be deeply missed.
