James “Jim” Wilbert Thompson, 84, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on April 2nd, 2023, surrounded by his nurturing family.
Jim was born on January 13th, 1939, to Dorothy and Grady Thompson. In his early childhood and adulthood, Jim was a handsome, blue-eyed, larger-than-life spitfire. He was brave, free-spirited, and he loved Jesus with all of his heart. Jim served in the US Navy and was a proud crew member of the USS O’Brien. A proud disciple, Jim was a Sunday School teacher, youth group leader, and a member of the church choir. His voice was deep, comforting, and he could sing Buddy Holly and Elvis songs with an alluring ease. Jim was strong-willed and stubborn, but those traits defined him. They were a part of who he was, and this very strength and spice undoubtedly aided him in persevering life’s challenges.
Early in life, Jim had the pleasure of meeting his bride, Tamara “Tam” Hedrick Thompson.Tam was his rock, his best friend, and his life partner. Together they shared 57 radiant years of marriage, and two beautiful daughters. A devoted husband and father, Jim’s family has always been his greatest accomplishment.
Jim is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, his wife Tam Thompson, daughters Camilla Gilbert and Polly Classey (Jeff Classey), grandchildren Sarah Johnson (Craig Johnson), Georgie Hovis (Devin Hovis), Beck Classey, Nolan Gilbert, Lilly Classey, and great grandchildren Paisley Grace Johnson, Abigail Jane Johnson, James Knox Johnson, and Olivia Kate Hovis. Jim was a proud Papa and loved all of his grands endlessly.
In his final chapters of life, Jim was a strong fighter who battled powerfully through chronic illness. He is now sailing on a journey to shores that we can not yet see. We know that he is free from pain and is rejoicing with his heavenly Father; surrounded by peace, love, and worship.
“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.” John 10:28-30
