Obituary

James J Gorman Jr.

January 16, 1934 - May 24, 2024

James J Gorman Jr., husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on May 24, 2024. He was born on January 16, 1934, in El Paso, TX, to James J Gorman Sr. and Nell Gorman.

Jim, as he was known, had a passion for Big Band music of the 1940s and he and Barbara often danced the night away at Big Band events. Sports also played a significant role in Jim's life, and he was a walking encyclopedia of batting averages and ERAs. He proudly supported (among others) the Astros, the Texans, and the University of Texas' sports teams, ensuring that his children knew how to Hook 'em Horns at a very early age.

Jim pursued his education at the University of Texas, where he earned a BA in Government and later went on to complete his MA in Public Administration from the University of Houston. Jim served in the Army as a transportation officer before starting his career at the NBC affiliate TV station in El Paso as a sportscaster. Relocating to Houston in 1963, he joined NASA JSC, where he dedicated 29 years of his life in various roles within the Personnel Management, Employee Development, and Equal Opportunity offices.

After retiring from NASA in 1992, Jim generously volunteered his time and skills to various organizations, including Space Center Houston, Memorial Hospital Southeast, South Houston Food Bank, and the Sagemont Area Office for Houston City Council, District E. He was an active member of Christ Church Cathedral in Houston, TX, where he served as a lector, worship leader, and coordinator of ushers for funeral services.

Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Gorman, his children Carol N Gorman (Teal) and John R Gorman (Karen), grandsons Trace, Trent, and Wyatt Gorman, step-granddaughters Chloe and Carley Beatty, and his loyal puppy dog, Little Bit.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the El Paso Foundation, the Houston Humane Society, or Christ Church Cathedral in honor of Jim's memory. Jim's memorial service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue, Houston, TX, on June 21st at 1200.
