James served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952
He was a self-employed builder
James enjoyed Sunday cookouts with the Carney brothers and their families, spent Friday nights at Grandma Shirley Carney's house with cousins, and made trips to Jamestown, R.I. to visit the Duffy's
He enjoyed watching pro football, baseball, and golf on TV, watching old movies on TCM, and listening to Frank Sinatra in the car
James is survived by his children, David Carney, Mary Stanton, James Carney Jr., and Megan Oberting, as well as grandchildren and great-granddaughters
He was predeceased by his siblings, William Carney, Patricia Bussey, Mary Carney, Thomas Carney, and Richard Carney, as well as sister-in-law Christina Astriab and other sisters- and brothers-in-law
Memorial donations in his name can be made to the Daughters of Sarah Jewish Foundation
