James (Bear) Lewis Grayson was born on January 18, 1951, in Dallas, Texas, to Melvin Franklin Blair and Johnnie Mae Grayson. From an early age, James had a passion for life, a sharp wit, and a compassionate heart.
He was educated in the Dallas Independent School District and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Furthering his dedication to spiritual growth and community, he attended Southern Bible Institute, where he nurtured his love for ministry and teaching.
James served as a faithful Deacon at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor Getral Wright and later at Marsalis Avenue Baptist Church under Senior Pastor Terry White.
A devoted family man, James retired from United Way, where he worked diligently and touched countless lives with his joyful demeanor and integrity. Outside of work, he had a deep love for sports—playing semi-pro football with the Dallas Outlaws and baseball with the Young Bloods. He also enjoyed gardening, comedy, swimming, and teaching Sunday School.
He was preceded in death by his father Melvin Blair, grandparents John and Elmar Grayson, and brothers John Van Grayson, Donald (Duck) Grayson, and Gary Blair.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving mother, Ms. Johnnie Mae Grayson; his devoted wife, Barbara Grayson; beloved daughter Brandi (Clifton) Morris-Jackson; grandson Aiden; brothers Melvin (Blind) Douglas Blair, Elmer (Bull) O’Neal Blair, Ronald (Skagg) Lawrence Blair, Anthony (Shug) Ray Blair, and Robert (Garlet) Blair; god-brother Edward James Mason; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and dear friends.
We'll plant real trees for you in James (Bear)'s memory and display your contribution forever.
