Obituary

Jaclyn Leigh Salzwedel, lovingly known as Queenie, passed away unexpectedly on June 29, 2024, at the age of 41. She was born on June 9, 1983, in Grand Rapids MI, and had resided in Wyoming until her passion for coaching took her to Wisconsin and Iowa, later returning to West Michigan.

On a picture on her wall was a quote, "Never let the fear of striking out get in your way" by Babe Ruth, epitomized her fearless nature and determination. Jaclyn's proudest accomplishment was earning the title of COACH. She was crowned Homecoming Queen on Friday the 13th in 2000 which earned her the nickname “Queenie”.

She attended Rogers High School, Class of 2001, and pursued her education at Grand Rapids Community College. She earned her associate degree and more importantly, continued the dream of playing softball. She furthered her softball resume at Aquinas College while obtaining her bachelor’s in arts in 2005, adding an additional two years of softball at the competitive level. She continued her pursuit of happiness, Coaching, at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville while earning a Master of Science in Education Degree.

Growing up she would often be found right alongside her brother. She loved her brother. Her brother adored her. Jaclyn held her friends near and dear to her heart. She loved the neighborhood and all the friendships that were formed, it was truly like “The Sandlot.” You know those bonds - stronger than steel. In the 90’s the “Phat 5” was established. This close-knit group of 5 girls shared something remarkable. 5 Ride or Die Sisters. Although the group will be one short, her legacy and stories must live on. Jaclyn would often lean on her “Tribe” – another close group of friends that were closer than many families, for guidance and inspiration. Jaclyn embodied her family and often reminisced about the time spent together. She cherished all of her aunts, uncles & cousins. BIGTIME!

Often blurting out “remember that time when we….”

Jaclyn aspired to make her parents proud. She was an excellent student in and out of the classroom, never had a negative review from her teachers and coaches. She looked up to her father Craig. He was always her biggest fan. Often echoing “If you build it, they will come.” He would take her anywhere across the United States and back if it meant his baby was chasing her dreams. As her biggest fan sometimes, he could come across a little strong, like that coach that pushes you without sugar coating it. This is where Jaclyn needed the hand and heart of her mother Kimberly. Jaclyn loved her mama. The two of them were spirit partners. Her mother was her biggest inspiration and cheerleader in life. Jaclyn loved how her mother exhibited the definition of “Mixing Cakes.” Mama was a fierce competitor just like her baby. Her generous heart and empathetic soul reflected her mother’s core values. She was an artist just like her mama. A true talent.

Jaclyn will be remembered for her bright smile, contagious laugh, kind spirit, and gentle heart. She had an old soul, in the kindest way. Displaying empathy, selflessness, and generosity. Known for her natural leadership, she was a compassionate and an outgoing individual who touched the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing her. If you knew Jaclyn, she really loved her baby boy, Riggins Michael.

Jaclyn had a great love and respect for the game of softball. She loved playing and coaching softball. She inspired her brother throughout her life and even got him addicted to softball. She always said you got to have a solid assistant. Her passion was contagious and her ability to teach the youth came from her years of great coaches to study under. Her unmatched determination to be the best was always on display. You become the best by training with the best and being coachable. Driving in the winning run in high school on a ‘bloop’ single that was just over the fielder’s glove. The winning assist from right field, on a rope to home plate in the little league world series. Winning the MHSAA Softball State Championship with the Golden Hawks. Taking the Clarke University Crusaders to the final four, within one game of the MCC Championship. She coached softball at all levels, yet she will always hold the Union High School team on a pedestal. You girls filled her soul. She was indeed a champion.

Jaclyn is survived by her parents, Craig and Kimberly Salzwedel, and her brother Adam (Amie) Salzwedel as well as her Godmother and many aunts, uncles & cousins.

She is preceded in death by her paternal Grandparents Merlin (Lucy) Salzwedel and Maternal Grandparents Glenn (Jackie) Stine as well as her dear cousin Stefan Veldheer and the love of her life Riggins Michael.

She adored her sidekick Katelynn and to say she loved her dogs, Riggins Michael, Tinker, and Lala was an understatement. Jaclyn's life mentors included many, to name a few - Coach Hudson, Coach Beem, Coach P., Coach Varnesdeel, Miss D., Coach Mikey, Amie her “Manager” and her Part - her big brother, Adam Glenn.

Her memory will forever be cherished and carried on by her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched as a teammate, a coach, and an employee at the US Postal Service.

Jaclyn had a deep appreciation for art, music, tattoos, and her cherished life-long friendships. Her favorite bands included Dave Matthews Band, Mac Miller, Darus Clark, Macklemore and 2Pac. Jaclyn also actively supported the LGBTQIA+ pride movement, showcasing her commitment to social causes.

“To succeed you need to find something to hold onto, something to motivate you, & something to inspire you.” Tony Dorsett

Jaclyn, we have always admired you, looked up to you, and we are all damn proud of you! Rest Easy Our Queenie

Now we ask for everyone to look for Jaclyn in the clouds like she did her baby Riggins or up in the stars or the cardinal sitting outside your window. When you do – tell her you love her. Jaclyn will be dearly missed, but her spirit and impact on others will live on.
