Mr. Huey Pierce Schoby 89, of South Bend, IN passed away peacefully on February 19, 2023, after a brief illness. Huey was a devoted member of Pilgrim Baptist Church. Huey was born on August 20,1933 to the late George and Willie Schoby in Mangham LA. Huey grew up with 12 siblings, two nieces and a nephew. He gave his life to Christ at an early age. After Huey graduated from Alto High School in 1951, he attended Southern University as a business major. Huey met and married Louise Harris in April of 1958. To this Union two children were born Cheryl Schoby Pittman and Christy Schoby Banger. Huey relocated to South Bend, IN in 1960 and began his quest to become an entrepreneur. In 1962 Huey was the first African American to be hired by the Indiana Toll Roll. He worked for Standard Oil as he prepared to open his first business in the South Bend area. In 1967 Huey opened and was the proud owner of west side's Schoby's Grocery & amp; Market. He also opened the well-known Champagne Lounge.
Huey was not only an entrepreneur in South Bend but was also very active in the community. He was an active participant in several key projects throughout the city. In 1969, he was an original founder of Solidarity Day and in 1970 he ran for 2nd District Councilman. In 1971 he was awarded South Bend All-American for his dedication and work within the community.
In 1985 Huey met and married Bettie Bluitt where he gained two bonus daughters Wendy Binion and Crystal McCain. Huey and Bettie celebrated 37 wonderful years together. In 1993 Huey became the first African American in Northern Indiana to own and operate a medical transportation company, CBS Medical Van Service. In 2007 Huey launched the first 'frustration' march for change of the Martin Luther King Jr. Street location. This march sparked the movement for other activist in the city to join in the fight. Huey has worn many hats; from entrepreneur, community activist, as well as sat on many organizational boards. His goal has always been to improve the lives of others. Huey continued to fight tirelessly until the very end for the betterment of the community. Huey was preceded in death by 12 siblings and 1 niece. Huey leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Bettie Schoby; children, James Willams, Opelousas, LA, Barbara Schoby, South Bend, In, Cheryl Schoby Pittman and Christy Schoby Banger, of Dallas, TX, Renauta Kirtdoll, South Bend, IN; bonus daughters, Wendy Binion and Crystal McCain of South Bend, IN; and 17 grand and great-grandchildren; his niece and nephew whom he was raised with, Gladys Shambery, Akron, OH, and nephew Alfred (Deloris) Shambery, South Bend, IN; along with a host of family and friends. Visitation will take place on Friday February 24, 2023 from 6PM-8PM and from 9AM to 10AM on Saturday February 25, 2023 at Pilgrim Baptist Church 116 Birdsell St. South Bend, IN 46628.
Celebration of Life will take place Saturday February 25, 2023 at 10 AM. Burial is scheduled to take place at Greater Pilgrim Rest Cemetery in Mangham, LA.
