“That best portion of a good man’s life, his little, nameless, unremembered, acts of kindness and of love.”
Hasan was only 42 years old when he was taken from us much too young, much too soon. His death was tragic and painful, a loss that shook us to our core. And yet, even in the sorrow, we remember the light he brought into our lives.
On the evening of April 15, 2025, Hasan's life was abruptly and violently taken. Around 11:15 p.m., police responded to a crash in the 5000 block of Vernon Avenue in North St. Louis. There, they found Hasan unconscious in his Toyota, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Authorities discovered several shell casings down the block from where Hasan's vehicle collided with two parked cars, suggesting he was shot before the crash.
Just 30 minutes before he left for work on the night of his death, he was in a community meeting discussing how to support people back home in Sudan—people suffering under the weight of a brutal civil war. The war, which began in April 2023, has become one of the deadliest conflicts of the 21st century. Over 62,000 people have died in the capital alone, and more than 14 million have been displaced. Hasan was working to be a part of the solution—offering his time, his ideas, and his heart to those in need, both near and far.
Hasan was a pillar of the St. Louis Sudanese community, a brother, a friend, a helper, a quiet force of kindness and compassion. Whether you needed a hand moving into a new apartment, guidance finding work, or simply someone to listen, Hasan was there. He gave so much of himself, not for recognition, but because that was who he was. Selfless. Genuine. Full of heart.
He loved his family deeply. Hasan just got married in 2023. At the time of his passing, him and his wife were expecting their first child. A child, Hasan was so excited to meet. A child who will one day know their father through the stories we tell, the love we carry forward, and the community he helped build.
In Islam, we are taught that life is temporary, and that every soul shall return to its Creator. As Allah reminds us in the Qur’an:
“Every soul shall taste death. And only on the Day of Judgment will you be paid your full recompense. So whoever is spared from the Fire and admitted into Paradise will indeed triumph. For the life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion.”
(Surat Aal-Imran, 3:185)
Hasan’s life is a testament to that truth. He lived with purpose, with faith, and with love. His character reflected the beauty of Islam—mercy, generosity, and service to others. Even in his final moments, and in the pain he endured, he reminded us of the strength that comes from belief and patience.
We mourn not just for the life lost, but for all the moments we won’t get to share—his child’s first steps, the laughter of future family gatherings, the everyday presence of his steady, caring soul. His absence is deeply felt, and yet, Hasan is still here in the lives he touched, in the memories we hold close, and in the legacy of love and service he leaves behind.
To know Hasan was to know kindness. To be around him was to feel cared for. He was gentle, humble, and strong in the quietest of ways. And even in death, his spirit reminds us to love more, to help more, and to hold each other a little tighter.
Hasan, you will never be forgotten. You live on in every life you lifted, in every heart you touched, and in the child who will one day grow up surrounded by the love you left behind.
We pray that Allah (SWT) grants him the highest place in Jannah, forgives his sins, and gives strength to his family in this difficult time.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un – Surely we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.
May he rest in peace, We carry you with us—always.
We'll plant real trees for you in Hasan's memory and display your contribution forever.
