Greg Pauley (71) passed away on February 8th 2025. He was born in Big Vein Virginia, on May 1st, 1953, to the late Scott and Ellen Schultz Pauley. Scott and Ellen had 14 children, seven boys and seven girls. Greg was the youngest boy and there was one sister younger than him.
After the tragic passing of his dad from a car accident in 1957, his mom moved him and his other siblings to Maryland. He grew up in Centerville, until his mom passed away in February of 1964. He then went to live with family Delaware and Lynchburg Virginia.
In 1969 he joined the United States Navy, and was stationed on the USS Newport News, out of Newport News Virginia. The USS Newport News (CA–148) was the third and last ship of the Des Moines-class of heavy cruisers in the United States Navy. She was the first fully air-conditioned surface ship and the last active all-gun heavy cruiser in the United States Navy. He was shipped out to fight in the war in Vietnam, from 1969 to 1972.
While operating off Vietnam, a turret fire and explosion in the Newport News (CA-148) killed 20 and injured another 36 sailors, on October 1st, 1972. While in the Navy dad was awarded a few medals and awards, that we're researching with the Navy at this time. He was so proud to have served his country! He wore his Vietnam Veteran hats and shirts daily!
After the Navy, he married the love of his life, Joanne Metsger Pauley, and had a beautiful family with three kids Tammy Lofland (Earl), Carolyn Connor (Bob), and Gerald Pauley (Lisa). They lived up and down the East coast, before settling in Fernandina Beach Florida, in 1994.
He worked in Jacksonville Florida at Atlantic Marine and Dry Dock (now BAE Systems) as a Longshoreman, master welder. Upon his retirement, they bought a beautiful piece of property in Bluefield Viginia, near where he was born. This was close to his youngest sister Deniece Dameron, friends, and other family. They loved to get together often and play cards and bags. After a number of years in Virgina, and having some health issues, they moved closer to family in Felton Delaware.
He was preceeded in death by his parents Scott and Ellen Pauley, his sister's and brother's Ina Rae McCormick, Clara Enis Smith, Madeleine Eva Ivins, Dona Leigh Sarver, James Whit Pauley, Charles Hamilton Pauley, Douglas Wayne Pauley, and Michael Dewright Pauley.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years Joanne Pauley, his sister's and brother's Doc, Larry, Anne, Patsy, and Deniece. His three kids Tammy, Carolyn, and Gerald, ten grandkids, and seven great grandkids.
Dad was an organ donor and donated his corneas. Now two people are able to see, because of his generosity.
His legacy will live on through his family, the countless lives he touched, and the love, laughter, and joy he gave so freely. His funny jokes, kind heart, and his warm and compassionate personality will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. We love and miss you so much!
He would often say "Do you walk to work or carry your lunch?" "Dumber than a box of rocks!"
The family will be getting together at a later date to celebrate the life of Greg with intimate family only.
